Billie Jean King: 39 Grand Slam titles
The zone: Billie-Jean King “It almost seems as though I’m able to transport myself beyond the turmoil on the court to some place of total peace and calm… I appreciate what my opponent is doing in a detached abstract way. Like an observer in the next room… It is a perfect combination of (intense) action taking place in an atmosphere of total tranquility.” Harung H, Travis F, Blank W, Heaton D, 2009, Higher development, brain integration, and excellence in leadership, Management Decision, 47(6): Billie Jean King: 39 Grand Slam titles

The zone: Doctor Might a mindful doctor be able to say? “It’s as though I’m able to transport myself beyond the unrelenting pressure of the shift to some place of peace and calm… I appreciate what is happening around me, as well as inside me, as if I’m observing my own absorbed engagement with my patient. It’s a combination of responsive rapport and action, taking place in an atmosphere of internal tranquillity.” Doctor: 11 hrs into 4th consecutive night shift

Student free-text feedback examples (1):
“I feel that the HEP could provide some useful concepts for some people. However, I do not believe that the programme has proved to be helpful for me personally.” “Personally, one session telling us about the benefits of mindfulness would have been useful. However 2 hour sessions every week have not been overly useful and I feel I could have put this time to far better use. The 2 hour sessions could easily be covered in about 30 minutes if necessary. “I agree that HEP is useful and a good idea but I think it was too focused on mindfulness. If mindfulness isn’t particularly useful for you it was a bit monolithic., there are many ways to improve health.

Student free-text feedback examples (2):
“It has genuinely been a massive help to learn about mindfulness, especially as I have had a couple of stressful events recently. I will certainly be taking mindfulness forward in my life and would certainly be interested in the training programs you talked about.” “HEP has been awesome. Thoroughly enjoyed the sessions. Interesting and extremely relevant. Loved the content + what I have learnt as well as the time spent with my group and with group 7.” “I have found that I am much more easily able to deal with situations out of my Control and stress and troublesome feelings in general, and credit this totally to mindfulness.” I do feel I have been more conscious of making healthy choices throughout the course & this is actually the first time in my life I have stuck with regular exercise for more than a few weeks.
