Base construction (2007) Develop Antarctic Gateway concept ATCM meeting in Cape Town
11
Objectives: Resource Management
To facilitate and regulate sustainable and equitable development and utilisation of marine living resources To optimise the sustainable use of SA’s coastal resources
12
ALLOCATION OF RIGHTS FOR CONSUMPTIVE AND NON CONSUMPTIVE USE
Allocate rights to 21 existing commercial fisheries Allocate rights to new fisheries (large pelagics, octopus, east of hangklip rock lobster) Allocate rights to non consumptive users (Boat based whale watching, shark cage diving, scuba diving). Allocate rights to subsistence fishers in new areas
13
DEVELOPMENT OF POLICIES AND NATURAL RESOURCE INFORMATION SYSTEMS
Develop sector plans and establish resource management working groups for existing and new fisheries Develop policy and OMP’s for eco-tourism in marine sector Promulgate and implement the Protected Areas Act, Biodiversity Act and Coastal Management Act Develop information management systems for biodiversity, marine and coastal management Develop policy on BEE in fishing industry
14
COASTAL MANAGEMENT AND DEVELOPMENT
