2 U.S. Imperialism Effects of the Industrial Revolution
Made U.S. very rich Created mass amounts of products Created needs for more places to sell goods The Industrial Revolution led to the U.S. broaden foreign markets to sell goods that we made.

Americans had to spread their culture, government (Democracy), and religion (Christianity) around the world. Americans were racially superior (white)

Manifest Destiny – America should be from sea (Atlantic) to sea (Pacific) God wanted this to happen Imperialism will be an expansion of Manifest Destiny

Imperialism – When one country takes over another either or combined economically ($$), militarily (army), governmentally (laws), or culturally (language). Isolationism – When a country only worries about itself and does not interfere with another country

Monroe Doctrine (1823)- America are the police in the Western Hemisphere. - No European powers allowed to make money in countries on this side of the earth. - U.S. will protect all countries from European countries.

Spanish-American War (1898)- Fought in Cuba. Cuba was fighting for their freedom from Spain. Battleship Maine- U.S. battleship that exploded in Havana harbor, killing 260 Americans. Americans blamed Spain and wanted to go to war against Spain.

Reasons for going to war with Spain: - Financial ($) U.S. had over $300 million in sugar industry invested in Cuba - Yellow Press/Journalism- Newspapers that mix facts with propaganda headlines to sell more newspapers Battleship Maine explosion

William Randolph Hearst/ Joseph Pultizer- Started Yellow Journalism. - Knew that war with Spain would make them money! (Sell more newspapers) Convinced American public that Spain blew up the Maine and war was needed.

War was fought in Cuba and Philippines. U.S. defeats Spain in 3 months Results of the War: 1. Cuba gets its freedom 2. Puerto Rico, Guam is a U.S. Territory 3. Philippines are controlled by U.S. 4. U.S. pays Spain $20 million 5. Spain is never a world power again

Alaska- Was part of Russia Most people in Russia and America thought it was just a block of ice William Seward- Secretary of State for U.S. (1867) Bought Alaska from Russia for $7.2 million “Seward’s Folley” many thought it was a big mistake to purchase Alaska.

Positives of Alaska: Americans found copper, oil, timber, and lots of Gold in Alaska. The purchase made a huge profit for the U.S. Russia tried to get it back after the purchase. Became the 49th state in 1959

Hawaii- Was an island country in the Pacific Queen Lilioukalani- Leader of Hawaii Needed workers for the fruit and sugar industry Allowed U.S. business in their country

14 U.S. Imperialism Lands Acquired – Hawaii cont.
Sanford B. Dole- Fruit and Juice company owner in Hawaii. American business leaders wanted to take power in Hawaii for profit reasons ($$). - Queen was thrown in jail and Dole made himself the leader of Hawaii annexed to U.S. - Hawaii becomes the 50th state in 1959.

U.S. Policies Open Door Policy (1899)- All countries have the right to trade with China. No one country can control trading rights in China Dollar Diplomacy- U.S. government guarantees loans by banks in foreign countries. Encouraged financial take over by U.S. business abroad Got U.S. business in foreign countries

Moral Diplomacy- U.S. would reject any government that was oppressive to its people or un-Democratic in Latin America. If we saw a country that did not support its people, U.S. will get involved (military). “Big Stick” Policy- “Speak softly, but carry a big stick” Roosevelt Corollary  Told Latin American countries that we rule this side of the Earth. Reinforced the Monroe Doctrine

17 U.S. Imperialism Lands Acquired – Panama Canal
U.S. asked Colombia to build a canal through Panama. 1. Military protection 2. Financial reasons (charge for going through) Colombia says no canal. U.S. tells Panama to revolt for freedom and that U.S. would back them.

18 U.S. Imperialism Lands Acquired – Panama Canal
Panama got its freedom, then asked U.S. if they’d like to build a canal. Took 10 years to build Considered one of the greatest engineering projects in the world U.S. paid $10 million, plus $250,000 per year

19 U.S. Imperialism Final Results
Between U.S. sent their military 20 times into Latin American countries By 1924 Half of all finances of Latin American countries were being directed by the U.S.
