When Constantine became the first Roman Emperor to become a Christian and promote Christianity throughout the empire, there was much unity among all Christians. As the new city of Constantinople began to flourish, the city of Rome in the western half of the Empire started to lose some significance. In the “New Rome” (Constantinople) there needed to be a religious leader. Instead of the pope, people in the Byzantine Empire are going to listen to this new religious leader called the patriarch.

These customs and beliefs cause people to have different viewpoints on how to worship their form of Christianity. One example is the use of icons (holy images). With all of the money flowing through Constantinople, many new artists were commissioned for paintings. With all the new buildings and monuments being built, they need to be decorated. Being the greatest Christian city in the world, people used artwork to display their beliefs. This was a big no-no for Roman Catholics.
