Byzantine art

Grounding Byzantine art is an art style which influenced in the cultural district of Eastern Rome from 330 to 1453. It´s named after the city of Byzantion (Constantinople, Istanbul) It was art of the church and the emperors court . The most important artforms were architecture, mosaics, frescos, paintings, icons, wood and bone reliefs and precious metal items. Wikipedia 2016

Body image in Byzantine art
A human body in Byzantine art isn't supposed to look realistic because portraying humans or other animals was banned. Facial features are highlighted and maybe a bit overdrawn - Some persons have halos on their heads symbolizing that they are some sort of saint

Women use long clothing which hides their whole body, exceptt face and hands
Like men, women were not allowed to be painted like they were pictured to be like. Outside Mary there were not many paintings where women were painted. All of these paintings showcase pretty similar body as nowadays normal body. -Painting “The Annunciation” presents announcement by the angel Gabriel to Virgin Mary that she would eventually become pregnant and give a birth to boy.
