Exposition
Provides the background information needed to understand a story, such as the protagonist, antagonist, and the setting.

2. Rising Action The basic conflict is introduced. The conflict could be man vs. man, man vs. self, or man vs. nature.

3. Climax This marks a turning point in the story. It is usually when the protagonist and antagonist fight for the last time.

4. Falling Action The conclusion between the protagonist and antagonist begins, mainly describing the winning (or losing) of the protagonist.

12. What Else Makes a Great Narrative?
A character is involved in the telling of the story. That character is usually a narrator. Narrators tell a story using first person point of view- I, me, my, mine

A narrative involves several characters involved with the narrator. These characters will interact with each other, usually using dialogue, or conversation.

The story teller employs descriptive action verbs.
These verbs really help the story “pop.”
HINT: Avoid “be” verbs- these verbs make our story boring.

16. What Else Makes a Great Narrative?
A narrative uses figurative language, such as imagery, to paint a scene into the reader’s mind. Imagery is a literary device that entices the reader’s senses. Readers can see, touch, taste, hear, or smell something within the story. Imagery helps to describe the setting, but it can be used to illustrate so much in a narrative!

Broken bottles, rotting fast-food containers, and rusting tin cans littered the bank of the eerily silent, polluted pond. Slimy green algae blanketed parts of the shore, and putrid, foul-smelling mud oozed around our shoes.

The writer’s VOICE can be heard. Make the story fit your personality; don’t make it generic. I want to hear YOU!
