Do Now: What is the difference between something that is implicit vs. something that is explicit? Explain. Have your parent letter slip out and ready to be collected if you did not submit it on Friday.

It was a dark and stormy night. EXPLICIT! This sentences does not imply anything. It presents an explicit description of the weather outside.

Even though we haven’t gotten it back yet, I’m not looking forward to Mr. Neiro posting that quiz grade on TeacherEase. IMPLICIT! This sentence implies that the speaker found the quiz difficult, and is anticipating a poor grade on the quiz. We know it’s implicit because this is never stated directly, just hinted.

5 Let’s try together. After the day I had at school, I need to just relax and unwind. IMPLICIT! This sentence implies that the speaker had a difficult, stressful or tiring day at school. We know it’s implicit because it is only implied that he or she had a bad day – but, we don’t know what actually happened or why.

6 Let’s try together. I am in a bad mood because I want some time to myself, but nobody is giving me any personal space. EXPLICIT! This sentence leaves nothing to the imagination. We know it’s explicit because it does not imply or hint at anything – it is straightforward and tells us what’s going on.

I do not think that students should be required to take the writing proficiency exam, because it is a timed test and some students do not do well on timed tests. Testing students’ knowledge won’t be accurate if their grades are lower just because they ran out of time. EXPLICIT! I believe that giving students timed tests is unfair.

IMPLICIT! I have heard from my friends that Ms. Villmann is a great teacher.

IMPLICIT! The immigrants were not familiar at first with their new surroundings, so they felt lonely and uncomfortable at first.

14 The trees were swaying wildly outside Anne's window as she prepared for bed, and the gutters were overflowing. IMPLICIT! A thunderstorm was happening outside as Anne got ready for bed, and it was raining heavily.
