1 GEOMETRY AND ART By: Kara Martin

2 Definitions Geometry – the mathematics of the properties, measurement, and relationships of points, lines, angles, surfaces, and solids Art – creative or imaginative activity, especially the expressive arrangement of elements within a medium

3 Why Should Math and Art Be Combined?
It’s good for your brain It encourages mathematics It shows different types of art It reveals things about nature

4 How Can Geometry and Art Be Combined?
Natural Art Line Designs Daisy Designs Op Art Mandalas Knot Designs Islamic Art Perspective

5 Natural Art Geometric art is found in many different places in nature.
One of the most common geometric characteristics in nature and in art is symmetry. The different types of symmetry include: bilateral, reflectional, and rotational symmetries.

6 Line Designs There are many types of line designs. This is just one example that I created on Sketchpad. All line designs can be made using only a straightedge.

7 Daisy Designs This design is one of the many daisy designs that can be created. A daisy design is anything that is created using only circles.

8 Optical Art This is an example of op art because of the optical illusions and effects. The dark and light sections show a change in surface, direction, and dimension.

9 Mandalas A mandala is a circular design based around the center.
In order to draw a mandala, one must create a design at the center of a circle and continue drawing that design outward.

10 Knot Designs Knot designs are geometric creations that “weave” in and out or “link” together. These designs are also known as small mazes or labyrinth designs. Knots have been used in all cultures of the world including Egypt, China, Peru, Rome, and Greece.

11 Islamic Art Islamic art combines mandalas and knot designs; this is just one example. Islamic artists knew geometry thanks to Euclid, Pythagoras, and others.

12 Perspective Perspective is the technique of portraying solid objects and spatial relationships on a flat surface so that they appear true-to-life. Artists use terms such as horizon line and vanishing point to describe perspective. This technique is also divided into one-point and two-point perspective.

13 Quilt Making Quilts are another type of geometric art.
This type of design is full of geometry. It uses measurement, symmetry, reflections, and rotations. Geometric planning and organization is also required.
