RockEdu: Creating a Sustainable STEM Connectome Through Science Outreach
Yasmen Khan, MSc; Anna Zeidman; Jeanne Garbarino, PhD The Rockefeller University Science Outreach Program, New York, NY 10065 @RockEdu_ #RockEdu Hackathon Professionals from diverse fields and disciplines work together with classroom teachers to examine tools and resources already in existence, and apply new, creative ways to make STEM education fun and exciting for both teachers and students LAB Out Loud (LOL) A sci-café style talk series where HS students can connect with cutting edge science research presented by Rockefeller scientists LAB Experiences Introduces the concepts of biomedical research to HS/MS science classes from under-resourced schools in NYC Evening Workshops These workshops introduce science teachers to research at Rockefeller, with the goal of bridging biomedical research to K-12 classroom settings RockEdu STEM Connectome K-12 Students K-12 Teachers LAB After-School Program (LAB-ASP) Created as a bridge program for the SSRP, to help provide greater access to science outreach programming and improve diversity Summer Science Research Program (SSRP) Pairs highly motivated and intellectually curious HS students with Rockefeller scientists for a 7-week research experience Summer Mini Courses The goal of these training sessions is to support teachers through hands-on laboratory experiences, dynamic discussions, and a forum for networking and collaboration Program Management Science Saturday An annual science festival that exposes the larger community to fun, accessible, hands-on science content, and introduces many new people to the Rockefeller Campus RockU Friday’s Designed for engaging campus families with fun science content Transferrable Skills for Scientist Volunteers Science Communication Networking Opportunities Bio Builder Community Engagement BioBus NYC DOE Organizational Partnerships Science Outreach Working to Inspire the Next Generation (SOWING) Support network for local outreach professionals Curriculum Development The Makery Mentoring/ Teaching Experience Cold Spring Harbor Math for America Genspace
