1
Estimation of Glucose Presented By Assist.Lecturer Aseel Ghassan Daoud
M.Sc. In pharmacy/ Clinical laboratory sciences
2
What is glucose? Glucose is the main digestion product of dietary carbohydrates. It is the main monosaccharide in blood.
4
How can excess glucose be stored in the body?
It can be stored as glycogen in liver and muscles Converted to fat and stored in adipose tissue How can glucose level be regulated in blood? Hormone that decreases BG : insulin Hormones that increase BG: Glucagon Cortisol Epinephrine Growth hormone
5
What are reference levels of blood glucose?
Fasting blood glucose (FBG): mg/dl FBG level is lower in whole blood than in serum? Glucose level is higher in capillary sample than in venous blood? Random blood glucose : < 150 mg/dl Glucose renal threshold: normal urine is glucose free. Impaired glucose tolerance (IGT) Impaired fasting glucose (IFG)
6
Hyperglycemia: Increased blood glucose level above normal level
It can be caused by:
7
Hypoglycemia: Blood glucose level less than 40 mg/dl
It can be caused by:
8
Diabetes mellitus: Types of DM:
It is a group of metabolic disorders where fasting glucose is ≥ 126 mg/dl and random glucose is ≥ 200 mg/dl Types of DM: Type 1 DM Type 2 DM Gestational DM Drug or chemical induced DM
9
How can glucose be estimated?
Commercial strips Enzymatic method Reductive method
