1 TJTS505: Master's Thesis Seminar
Lecture 8: Mini thesis II Shuaiqiang wang Department of CS-IS, JYU

2 Solid Do a solid work Hypotheses & assumptions Claims
Techniques & Tricks Unexpectedness Thesis writing

3 Hypotheses & assumptions
Research starts from hypotheses and assumptions Our cases and instances is not a mirror of reality. We need to focus on the principle and fundamental factors meanwhile ignore trivial information For management-oriented research, verification of the hypotheses is the main mission For technique-oriented research, theoretical proof and/or experimental demonstration of the assumptions’ effects is an important issue

4 claims You might make some claims, based on which you use some techniques to analyze your data and solve your problems For example, ”The main challenge of our problem is…”, ”One of the most important properties in this problem is…”, etc. Add references if possible Experimentally demonstrate them if possible

5 techniques & tricks You might adopt some techniques & tricks to solve your problem You use a questionnaire method to collect your data You use a specific machine learning method to solve the problem Why? Why not other methods? Explain every techniques and tricks, even you think it is very trivial Your readers might be a beginner, or work in a different area and thus lack of backgrounds

6 Unexpectedness Every work starts from an initial idea, which could be very simple, straightforward and naive. Even you’ve tried your best to made a very detailed research plan, it might not be so solid. Uncertainty is a part of research You are a beginner When you perform your plan, you might find some observations beyond your expectations, and even completely opposite Try to provide reasonable explanations and discussions

7 Thesis writing Master thesis writing is actually an academic training
Learn how to do research: Planning  Performing  Writing  Reporting Logic is the most important thing Do make it simply, clearly and straightforwardly Write your own words. Don’t copy and paste.

8 homework Try to make progress on your mini-thesis
Subject of your TJTS505: Mini thesis + Your full name Deadline: Before next class Demonstrate your work Oral presentation with slides Time: Next class
