1 Personal Protective Equipment
Opening Slide

2 OBJECTIVES When finished with this section, participants will be able to:
List three reasons for wearing proper PPE List the components of Levels A, B, C, and D PPE List one strength and one weakness of each level of PPE List objectives Point 3 may generate some discussion. Ask the participants how being better protected could be a bad thing. Some examples would be “restricted vision, added weight, heat problems, etc.”

3 Level D No respiratory protection No skin protection
Ordinary work clothing Additional equipment as needed Level “D” protection is everyday work clothing. Ask one of the participants wearing proper work clothing (No tennis shoes or shorts) to stand to emphasize the point.

4 Level D Good Points Ease of movement No added stress Bad Points
No protection While the volunteer is still standing, ask the participants to list the good and bad points of Level D protection. Stress that there can be NO possibility of exposure while wearing Level D.

5 Level C Chemical protective clothing Air purifying respirator
Additional equipment as needed Ask the participants to list the parts of Level C before showing the rest of the slide. Spend as much or as little time as needed to refresh the participants’ memory.

6 Level C Good Points Ease of movement Minimal weight Minimal stress
Bad Points Minimal protection APR places additional strain on heart and lungs No good in IDLH atmosphere Ask the participants to list the advantages and limitations of Level C protection. A brief discussion of IDLH at this point would aid in refreshing the participants’ memory.

7 Level B Chemical protective clothing Supplied air respirator
Additional equipment as needed Ask the participants to list the parts of Level B before showing the rest of the slide. Spend as much or as little time as needed to refresh the participants’ memory

8 Level B Good Points Better skin protection Best respiratory protection
Bad Points Increased heat stress Added weight or dragging a hose Ask the participants to list the advantages and limitations of Level B protection.

9 Level A Totally encapsulated suit Supplied air respirator
Additional equipment as needed Ask the participants to list the parts of Level A before showing the rest of the slide. Spend as much or as little time as needed to refresh the participants’ memory

10 Level A Good Points Best respiratory protection Best skin protection
Bad Points Added weight Added stress False sense of security Ask the participants to list the advantages and limitations of Level A protection.

11 Respirators Full-Filtering Facepiece ½ Face Air-Purifying
Full-Face Air Purifying Airline W/O escape W/escape SCBA Be prepared to discuss in depth the different types of respirators. Point out that only Airline W/escape and SCBA can be used in IDLH atmospheres.

12 Concentration Outside
Protection Factors Concentration Outside Concentration Inside ½ APR = 10 FFAPR = 50 SAR w/o escape = 2000 SAR w/escape & SCBA = 10,000 Give a brief review of how protection factors are determined and the protection factors for various respirators. Point out that the protection factors are under ideal circumstances and actual factors may be less. There is also a safety factor built in. An individual protection factor may be higher. This does not mean that the respirator can be used in a higher concentration than what would be used with the “official” protection factors listed above.

13 Respirator Program 29CFR1910.134
Written Employees have a right to see Requires annual: Medical Evaluation Fit Testing Training These are some of the requirements from the Respirator standard. Discuss these points. Ask the participants if anyone has been fit-tested or wears a respirator on their job. Are the above requirements being followed?

14 OBJECTIVES When finished with this section, participants will be able to:
List three reasons for wearing proper PPE List the components of Levels A, B, C, and D PPE List one strength and one weakness of each level of PPE Restate objectives. Take any questions
