7. IT Consultancy Proposal
Many CERN groups and users do computing projects and would benefit from early enough consulting with an IT expert:
To exchange ideas to understand the supported IT landscape at CERN
Help with system architecture and design
Assess impact on security, software licenses, cost
Enable the IT department to identify demands early enough in order to consider central provisioning
Ignacio is working with the GLs and other members to make a proposed staffing and mandate
There are a number of IT activities at CERN that are out of IT Department.
Many of them would benefit from consulting with an IT expert preferably at an early stage to provide a wider view to understand de IT landscape at CERN, help with system architecture and design, encourage reuse, etc.
CERN could save money by having a wider view when starting computing activities.
While realizing that some groups may never agree, giving an access point for consultancy may help with a large fraction of projects.
