September 10, 2018 Your encounter with academic information, with knowledge, is a bit like playing a board game: you start from a clearly defined space and then work your way out, travelling further and further away from that starting point as you go deeper and deeper into an understanding of your subject. This session will map out the starting point and will also tell you the places you’re likely to be exploring next, and give you some tips to help along the way. Start here: Reading Online
September 10, 2018 Start here: Reading Online Has anyone used this? Can you say what it is/does? Over 70% of UEA undergraduate reading lists have been loaded into Reading Online, our reading list software. It makes life quicker and easier for you by bringing all your core reading for your modules together and letting you click straight through to it in digital form. Ask a participant to say how to navigate through to Reading Online and try to find a relevant reading list Get to it: from the ‘Learn’ page, or from the Library home page, linked on right.
6
September 10, 2018 * On Reading Online you’ll see material in categories like ‘core texts’, ‘desirable’, ‘other useful texts’ and ‘background reading’.

Explore your subject: Library Search
September 10, 2018 Explore your subject: Library Search Get to it: from the ‘Learn’ page, or from the Library home page, linked up at the top right; or just Google for it : ) What is it? - a catalogue of everything we have in the library – both physical, printed stuff and digital - it’s like a walled garden of organised, carefully chosen material that’s been bought by UEA - it doesn’t contain everything out there, just like the library doesn’t contain every book ever written: just a slice, not the whole pie. Has anyone used Library Search yet? Can you remember what you looked up? Let’s try it again.

Taming Google for academic study
See the most current results The joys of Google Scholar See links to full-text journal articles
14
If you find a lot of older material in your searches, customise the setting under ‘Search tools’.
15
No ‘Google doodle’ – but Scholar brings back results ONLY from academic journals and books.
In that respect it’s like Library Search, but … Do you already know what the difference is? Or can you guess?
16
September 10, 2018 * … it’s not just looking at the material that UEA has chosen and paid for: it’s finding a much bigger piece of the pie. Including things that we DON’T have access to.
17
September 10, 2018 But you CAN make it show you what UEA has access to, and get to that stuff quickly and easily. Here’s how …
