What I learned Gary hanged himself Being different was beyond his control It hurts to be different That pain is unknown to others Gary had nobody to stand with him Those who taunt people for being different are ruthless

5 Preach Jesus When did Jesus stand on the side of a person who had been singled out and needed an advocate?

6 2 At dawn he appeared again in the temple courts, where all the people gathered around him, and he sat down to teach them. 3 The teachers of the law and the Pharisees brought in a woman caught in adultery. They made her stand before the group 4 and said to Jesus, “Teacher, this woman was caught in the act of adultery. 5 In the Law Moses commanded us to stone such women. Now what do you say?” 6 They were using this question as a trap, in order to have a basis for accusing him.

7 But Jesus bent down and started to write on the ground with his finger
But Jesus bent down and started to write on the ground with his finger. 7 When they kept on questioning him, he straightened up and said to them, “Let any one of you who is without sin be the first to throw a stone at her.” 8 Again he stooped down and wrote on the ground. 9 At this, those who heard began to go away one at a time, the older ones first, until only Jesus was left, with the woman still standing there. 10 Jesus straightened up and asked her, “Woman, where are they? Has no one condemned you?”

8 11 “No one, sir,” she said. “Then neither do I condemn you,” Jesus declared. “Go now and leave your life of sin.” NIV Note: many early manuscripts do not contain this story

9 Lev 20:10 “‘If a man commits adultery with another man’s wife—with the wife of his neighbor—both the adulterer and the adulteress are to be put to death. Weight of law Find it Woman caught on adultery Preach Jesus People are more important than law People will always test how u will respond Children People forget their own depravity / history People fear letting a sin go unpunished because it might infect the entire pot People are selective in their punishment Where was the man? Is the black man treated the same as the white? The Asian? The Native American? Chicago showed me we are not a melting pot. Collection of neighborhoods Homogeneous principle West side story Natalie wood gangs Puerto Ricans hated

10 Lev 20:10 “‘If a man commits adultery with another man’s wife—with the wife of his neighbor—both the adulterer and the adulteress are to be put to death. Every mans primary goal is to provide for his family and the ones he loves. Steal. Push others out of way in food line. They will sneak cross borders to get a job. How do you identify with the other person? Sin. Jesus went with core of our nature that he knew every person could relate to. Never committed adultery? Fine Never sought out love in wrong manner? Fine. Never sold yourself to feed the mouths of those at home? How have you sinned? How can u relate to her? Philemon Standing for the person who is hated takes courage. Will cost u Hurt by the church Truth doesn't matter Perception of truth matters What sin of yours led to this. Those whose side lost the election. Did u pause 8 years ago to consider how losers felt?

11 People are more important than the keeping of the Law
Luke 14:14 One Sabbath, when Jesus went to eat in the house of a prominent Pharisee, he was being carefully watched. 2 There in front of him was a man suffering from abnormal swelling of his body. 3 Jesus asked the Pharisees and experts in the law, “Is it lawful to heal on the Sabbath or not

12 People are more important than the keeping of the Law
Luke 14:4 But they remained silent. So taking hold of the man, he healed him and sent him on his way. 5 Then he asked them, “If one of you has a child or an ox that falls into a well on the Sabbath day, will you not immediately pull it out?” 6 And they had nothing to say. NIV

13 So What? Sympathy- I feel sorry for them
Empathy- How must that person feel? I want to identify w/ them. Hold to your convictions Hold to right and wrong Be a person of action Go to the person Be courageous Be an advocate for the person
