How does leading in your chapter differ from other leadership roles you may have had?

4 Who?

5 Key Volunteer Facts 90% of recruited volunteers have direct personal link to organization Women – 106 hrs/yr Men – 85 hrs/yr Volunteers want more specific experiences The amount of time people have to volunteer is decreasing People are twice as likely to volunteer if involved as child/youth Volunteering is therapeutic!

6 Five Levels of Volunteer Agreement
THE MEANING OF YES I have no intention of doing what you ask—I just couldn’t say no Yes.. but with qualifiers and conditions that may or may not be communicated Yes.. I will do it, but my way Yes.. with a motivation to personally contribute Yes.. Almost Spiritual.. will live by my word

7 The 21st Century Volunteer
The New Breed of Professionals Generational Dynamics Veterans Boomers Gen X Millennials Generation Z Young Professionals

8 Tapping into the New Breeds
The Young Professionals They’re impatient They’re multi-taskers They think “digital” They’re looking for causes They’re team players….but…!! They don’t want to managed; they want to be led!!!

9 What the Generations Have In Common

13 How?

14 Looking Back to Look Forward…
Think about a time when someone motivated you… to do something you weren’t sure you wanted to do… To join the Board To take a job Clean your room Take out the garbage Who was it? Child Coworker Boss Spouse Friend What did they do to motivate you?

15 Recruiting the New Breed: “Dating”
First date – communicate the opportunity to join the leadership team/tribe/chapter Second date – listen to their interests – find a fit Third date – ask them to consider going “steady” The “trick” is to offer a small role in a “big picture”

16 The Seven Deadly Sins Sin 1 – Expecting “Announcements” to obtain Volunteer Leaders Sin 2 – The Only Lonely Syndrome Sin 3 – Recruiting volunteers to make long-term commitments Sin 4 – Assuming that “No” means “Never” Sin 5 –Asking busy people to do busy work Sin 6 – Not taking the time and resources to train them and letting them know they have been trained Sin 7 – Not “paying” them enough

17 The Seven Deadly Sins Sin 1 – Expecting “Announcements” to obtain Volunteer Leaders Solution: Do not expect to receive responses. Use multiple communication channels Make it personal Be specific….

18 Planning For Recuitment
What skills are you looking for? What Psychological & Motivational attributes are needed? Who in the “greater community” might have these skills? What is the hook for them? Where can you connect with them? How will your message be more memorable than the 100s of others they will get?

19 Screening & Expectations
Interview volunteers, choose those that are the best fit Explain time commitments & scheduling Provide volunteer ‘job’ descriptions to match skills to positions Ask volunteers to complete Skills Checklist of knowledge & requirements ©HULL & ASSOCIATES

20 The Seven Deadly Sins Sin 2 – The Only Lonely Syndrome Solution:
Don’t invite and drop! Have more than one person ask and work with them Use warm up activities

21 The Seven Deadly Sins Sin 3 – Recruiting volunteers to make long-term commitments Solution: Try before you buy!

22 The Seven Deadly Sins Sin 4 – Assuming that “No” means “Never”
Solution: Ask more than once!

23 The Seven Deadly Sins Sin 5 –Asking busy people to do busy work
Solution: Break jobs down. Show how the job connects to the mission and their mission

24 Volunteer Reflections:
Do I want to volunteer my professional expertise, learn something or do something mindless? What do I like vs. what don’t I like? What am I good at vs. not good at? How much time do I have to give? Do I want to volunteer alone or in a group? What motivates me to volunteer?

25 The Seven Deadly Sins Sin 6 – Not investing the time and resources to train them…and letting them know they have been trained. Solution: Invest in them and they will invest in you

26 Training Volunteers are diverse in every way
Find out how they would handle conflict. Use on and offline methods Offer real-world scenarios – What would you do in this situation?

27 How do we Pay Volunteers?
The Seven Deadly Sins Sin 7 – Not paying them enough Solution: Pay them!!! How do we Pay Volunteers?

28 - Specific to each person
Celebrating! Do we have a system to celebrate your Members/Leaders and the work they have done? - Fair to everyone - Specific to each person
