8 History of the U3A U3A originated in France in 1973 Associated with Universities Academic model which is used in many other countries Early 1980’s arrived in UK Move to a self help organisation Peer learning using members experience & knowledge Each group an autonomous entity 2015 over 950 UK groups 36,000 course 350,000 members

9 Virtual U3A Launched in 2009 Friends support and learning on-line Important for isolated people in rural areas

10 What is the U3A National network of learning groups Aimed at people no longer in employment with no age limits No exams or homework regular lessons or study groups Like minded people with a shared interest Learning for fun not qualifications Accessibility Cost –membership fees set by groups

16 High Lane testimonials Janette- I was introduced to the U3A by a neighbour- I was daunted by the “university” title and thought it was not for me. How wrong I was . I was amazed at the activities on offer and the opportunity to make new friends whilst learning new skills.
