“For unto us a Child is born, Unto us a Son is given; And the government will be upon His shoulder. And His name will be called Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace” (Isaiah 9:6).
5
Wonderful 1) The meaning of the word.
“A masculine noun meaning a wonder, a miracle, a marvel. This word is used to represent something unusual or extraordinary” (CWSD, p. 899). “Anything which is suited to excite wonder and amazement, from any cause, will correspond with the sense of the Hebrew word. It is a word which expresses with surprising accuracy everything in relation to the Redeemer. For the Messiah was wonderful in all things. It was wonderful love by which God gave him, and by which he came; the manner of his birth was wonderful; his humility, his self-denial, his sorrows were wonderful; his mighty works were wonderful; his dying agonies were wonderful; and his resurrection, his ascension, were all suited to excite admiration and wonder” (Barnes Notes on the Old Testament).

Wonderful 2) Jesus is wonderful because of –
(a) That from which He saved us! “Grace to you and peace from God the Father and our Lord Jesus Christ, who gave Himself for our sins, that He might deliver us from this present evil age, according to the will of our God and Father, to whom be glory forever and ever. Amen” (Galatians 1:3-5). “And these will go away into everlasting punishment, but the righteous into eternal life” (Matthew 25:46).
7
Wonderful 2) Jesus is wonderful because of –
(b) That for which He saved us! “to an inheritance incorruptible and undefiled and that does not fade away, reserved in heaven for you” (1 Peter 1:4). “And God will wipe away every tear from their eyes; there shall be no more death, nor sorrow, nor crying. There shall be no more pain, for the former things have passed away” (Revelation 21:4).

Wonderful 2) Jesus is wonderful because of –
(c) That with which He saved us! “The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him, and said, “Behold! The Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world!” (John 1:29). “In Him we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of His grace” (Ephesians 1:7).

Wonderful Counselor
10
“For unto us a Child is born, Unto us a Son is given; And the government will be upon His shoulder. And His name will be called Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace” (Isaiah 9:6).
11
Counselor 1) The definition of this word.
“advise, counsel; wonder of a counselor, of the ideal ruler predicted” (BDBG, p. 419). “The second name if yōʿētz, counsellor, because, by virtue of the spirit of counsel which He possesses (Isaiah 11:2), He can always discern and given counsel for the good of His nation. There is no need for Him to surround Himself with counsellors; but without receiving counsel at all, He counsels those that are without counsel, and is thus the end of all want of counsel to His nation as a whole” (Keil and Delitzsch, p. 164).
12
Counselor 2) Notice how He gives counsel – through His word.
“It is the Spirit who gives life; the flesh profits nothing. The words that I speak to you are spirit, and they are life” (John 6:63). “But Simon Peter answered Him, “Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life” (John 6:68).
13
Counselor 3) Paul’s instruction to Timothy.
“All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work” (2 Timothy 3:16-17). It will tell you how to be right, get back right, make things right, and how to stay right. One must listen to our great Counselor!

Wonderful Counselor Mighty God
15
“For unto us a Child is born, Unto us a Son is given; And the government will be upon His shoulder. And His name will be called Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace” (Isaiah 9:6).
16
Mighty God 1) Meaning of this expression.
“mighty hero or divine hero (as reflecting the divine majesty)” (BDBG, p. 42). “There is no reason why we should take El in this name of the Messiah in any other sense than in Immanu-El; not to mention the fact that El in Isaiah is always a name of God, and that the prophet was ever strongly conscious of the antithesis between El and âdâm, as Isaiah 31:3 (cf., Hos 11:9) clearly shows” (Keil and Delitzsch, p. 164). “Behold, the virgin shall be with child, and bear a Son, and they shall call His name Immanuel,” which is translated, “God with us” (Matthew 1:23).
17
Mighty God 2) He became flesh.
“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God…And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we beheld His glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth” (John 1:1,14).
18
Mighty God 3) He is our Creator and Sustainer.
“For by Him all things were created that are in heaven and that are on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or principalities or powers. All things were created through Him and for Him. And He is before all things, and in Him all things consist. And He is the head of the body, the church, who is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, that in all things He may have the preeminence” (Colossians 1:16-18).

“For unto us a Child is born, Unto us a Son is given; And the government will be upon His shoulder. And His name will be called Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace” (Isaiah 9:6).
21
Everlasting Father 1) Definition of this expression.
“lit. father of eternity” (Wilson, p. 150). “figurative of benevolence & protection; perhaps also of gracious Mess. king Isa 9:5 everlasting father” Brown-Driver-Briggs). “The title Eternal Father designates Him, however, not only as the possessor of eternity (Hengstenberg), but as the tender, faithful, and wise trainer, guardian, and provider for His people even in eternity” (Keil & Delitzsch, p. 164).
22
Everlasting Father 2) Jesus is eternal.
“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God’ (John 1:1-2). “That which was from the beginning, which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes, which we have looked upon, and our hands have handled, concerning the Word of life—the life was manifested, and we have seen, and bear witness, and declare to you that eternal life which was with the Father and was manifested to us” (1 John 1:1-2).
23
Everlasting Father 3) His protection and provisions.
“Seeing then that we have a great High Priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast our confession. For we do not have a High Priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses, but was in all points tempted as we are, yet without sin. Let us therefore come boldly to the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy and find grace to help in time of need” (Hebrews 4:14-16).
24
Wonderful Counselor Mighty God Everlasting Father Prince Of Peace
25
“For unto us a Child is born, Unto us a Son is given; And the government will be upon His shoulder. And His name will be called Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace” (Isaiah 9:6).
26
Prince Of Peace 1) Definition of this term.
Prince – “a captain, commander, chief” (Wilson, p. 327). BDB says, “specif. military = captain, general” Peace – (p. 978). “health, welfare, peace; concord, friendship” (Wilson, p. 305). “…a Prince who removes all peace-disturbing powers, and secures peace among the nations (Zech. 9:10),- who is, as it were, the embodiment of peace come down into the world of nations (Mic. 5:4). To exalt the government of David into an eternal rule of peace, is the end for which He is born; and moreover He proves Himself to be what He is not only called, but actually is” (Keil & Delitzsch, p. 164).
27
Prince Of Peace 1) Peace between God and man.
“Therefore, having been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ” (Romans 5:1). “And how shall they preach unless they are sent? As it is written: “How beautiful are the feet of those who preach the gospel of peace, Who bring glad tidings of good things!” (Romans 10:15).
28
Prince Of Peace 2) Peace between men.
“For He Himself is our peace, who has made both one, and has broken down the middle wall of separation, having abolished in His flesh the enmity, that is, the law of commandments contained in ordinances, so as to create in Himself one new man from the two, thus making peace” (Ephesians 2:14-15).
29
Prince Of Peace 3) Peace with self.
“Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God; and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus” (Philippians 4:6-7).
