Zapping into learning: Using Zaption in the Classroom
Jenny Chastain
2
What is Zaption? Zaption allows teachers to transform learning by making video learning interactive! Teachers can add pictures, text, and many different types of questions to enhance the video learning experience for students. Teachers receive feedback on how the students’ interact with the content along with data from the questions. The Zaption Gallery has interactive videos already made that teachers can assign to their students as well!
3
How does Zaption support the vision of Beaver Ridge Elementary School?
BRES Vision: The mission of Beaver Ridge Elementary School is to develop life long learners achieving academic and personal excellence. Zaption helps to develop life long learners by helping students to learn and gain information from through e-learning, a growing insructional format in both colleges and businesses according to eLearning Industry. Zaption helps students achieve academic excellence by making learning interactive and allowing students to control the speed of their learning.
4
What grade levels can Zaption be used for?
Zaption can be used for grades K-12! If a student can push play on a video, the student can use Zaption. It’s as easy as that!
5
A note on equitable access
Zaption offers many ways to make learning accessable for all students. Zaption offers 4 different languages for users to chose from and gives the creator (teacher) the option to add closed caption into the video. Zaption also offer shortcut keys to help navigate the program. Students can access a Zaption tour at anytime, giving them the flexibility to access learning both at school and at home. It is important that students be given ample time at school to access the tour.
6
Equipment needed In order interact with a Zaption tour, students will need access to a device with internet access. While Zaption is web-based, students should be able to access Zaption tours on Android and Apple devices, however there is an app available for Apple devices to make viewing easier. It is recommended that students have access to headphones while viewing the tours.
7
Any technical support provided?
Zaption has a bank of frequently asked questions as well as video help available online for teachers. If additional support is needed, teachers can contact Zaption through their help center or by giving them a call at the number listed at zaption.com
8
Limitations? Since users can make a tour out of any video from a video site, it is important that teachers ensure that the video that plan to assign to their students in safe and appropriate for the age level. Copyright issues should be taken into consideration when deciding on a video to use in a tour. Zaption works to address copyright issues and will make a video tour no longer available if it is found to violate this. All photographs and charts that teachers include in their Zaption video tour need to follow copyright laws.
9
Cost Zaption offers a basic service which is 100% free! With this subscription, users can create a Zaption video tour with up to 5 interactive elements. Zaption also offers a paid subscription which allows users to add more than 5 interactive elements including discussion feature, allows multiple editors to the tours, and has sharing and data features. Pro Classroom cost is $89/year. Pro Campus (15 or more classrooms) start at $995/year.
10
Funding sources BRES is a title one school and title one funds could be used to purchase the Pro Classroom and/or Pro Campus subscriptions. Teachers can also request funding through a grant request or a funding site such as DonorsChose.org.

How can Zaption be used in the classroom?
Teachers can create and assign Zaption tours based upon content standards being learned in the classroom. By allowing students to view the tours at their own pace, teachers are able to differentiate the speed of learning for students and this allows extra time for teachers to work in small groups or 1-1 with students. Zaption tours helps to meet specific student learning goals such as listening by allowing the students to gain knowledge through the tour. Again, these tours are also learner centered by putting the learner in charge of the pace of his learning and allowing him to repeat as necessary. Since Zaption is accessable both at school and at home, parents are able to access the Zaption tours and thus can be involved in the learning process.

What does the research say?
Research is still being conducted regarding the effectivness of using Zaption in the classroom. Building Zaption's Ecosystem to Support Video Learning at Scale is currently being researched to examine Zaption. While still in progress, phase I is complete and researchers found that teachers were able to integrate the videos into their classroom and students found the mobile app engaging. Teachers have found that the use of Zaption increases homework completion rate according to D. Valentine.

Plan for implementation
In order to implement Zaption at BRES, I recommend following the Kotter 8-Step Plan for Implementing Change. This plan recommends beginning by getting stakeholders at BRES excited about using a tool like Zaption. Next, I would get my technology team on board and together we would create a vision as to how we want to see Zaption being used at BRES. We will then need to remove any obstacles by ensuring that web filters allow teachers access to plenty of quality videos that can be used with Zaption. Once teachers are using Zaption, we will need to celebrate all accomplishments and then continue to evaluate and develop the vision.
14
Reflection While Zaption is a relatively new tool, it has the potential to impact the classroom greatly. I found using Zaption fairly easy and it only took me about 20 minutes to create my first tour. I believe that students would greatly benefit from learning through Zaption tours over simply viewing as video in the classroom, which frequently occurs in the classroom. Through Zaption students can pace and monitor themselves, allowing them to re-watch videos as needed. I think that teachers could use this as a pre-learning tool to help determine students’ previous knowledge as well as a tool to assist in learning. Students could also use this tool when reviewing material. Since Zaption offers a free version, I suggest that teachers try out this version first to determine how it can fit into their classroom learning.
