pR^ithivii vishvasya dhaariNii naaraayaNaad-bramhaa jaayate From Narayana emerged the five elements - space, air, fire, water and earth. These elements became the basis of the universe. From Narayana emerged the Creator Brahma. Intonation: aa=low aa=high aa=high & drag

sarvaaNi cha chhandaa(gm)si naaraayaNaad-eva samut-padyante From Narayana emerged the 12 Adityas, 11 Rudraas, 8 Vasus and all the Vedas. From Narayana, alone, emerged all the types of wealth. Intonation: aa=low aa=high aa=high & drag

OM | atha nityo naaraayaNaH bramhaa naaraayaNaH shivash-cha naaraayaNaH Thus all beings emerged from Narayana who sustains them. Finally all beings merge with him. Narayana is the eternal principle. Narayana is the Creator - Brahma & the Destroyer – Shiva. Intonation: aa=low aa=high aa=high & drag

shakrash-cha naaraayaNaH dyaavaa-pR^ithivyau cha naaraayaNaH
kaalash-cha naaraayaNaH dishash-cha naaraayaNaH Narayana is Shakra (Indra). Narayana is the inner principle of the Heavens and Earth. Narayana is the underlying priciple of Time and the different directions. Intonation: aa=low aa=high aa=high & drag

uurdhvash-cha naaraayaNaH adhash-cha naaraayaNaH antar-bahish-cha
naaraayanNaH naaraayaNa eveda(gm) sarvam He is present in all the higher and the lower worlds. Narayana pervades the entire cosmos and forms the inner and outer worlds. He is within and without us. Everything is a manifestation of Narayana alone. Intonation: aa=low aa=high aa=high & drag

nirvikalpo niraakhyaataH
yad-bhuutam yach-cha bhavyam nishhkalo niraJNjano nirvikalpo niraakhyaataH shuddhdo deva eko naaraayaNaH He embodies the past and the future. He is blemish-less, ever-blissful, without a second, all-pervasive and pure. Intonation: aa=low aa=high aa=high & drag

na dvitiiyo.asti kashchit ya evaM veda sa vishhNur-eva bhavati
It is He alone who exists. He is One without a second. Only one who knows and understands this merges with Him. He merges with Him (stressed for importance) . Intonation: aa=low aa=high aa=high & drag

OM ityagre vyaaharet naaraayaNaa-yetyu- parishhTaat
nama iti pashchaat naaraayaNaa-yetyu- parishhTaat The primordial sound Om has to be uttered first followed by Namo. Then comes the meditation on Narayana. Intonation: aa=low aa=high aa=high & drag

syaashhTaaksharaM padam
OM ityekaaksharam nama iti dve akshare naaraayaNaayeti paJNchaaksharaaNi etad-vai naaraayaNa- syaashhTaaksharaM padam OM consists of one syllable. Nama consists of two syllables. Narayana has five syllables. Together they form the eight- syllabled sacred mantra - Om Namo Narayanaya. Intonation: aa=low aa=high aa=high & drag

anapabruvas-sarvam-aayureti
yo ha vai naaraayaNa- syaashhTaaksharaM padam-adhyeti anapabruvas-sarvam-aayureti This eight-lettered mantra is the most sacred - the king among the mantras. One who contemplates on this eight- syllabled chant attains good health all his life. Intonation: aa=low aa=high aa=high & drag

vindate praajaa-patya(gm) raayas-poshhaM gau-patyam
tato.amR^itatvam-ashnute tato.amR^itatvam-ashnuta iti ya evaM veda || He enjoys prosperity fit for a king, knowledge & the status of a ruler. He attains immortality. Only one who knows this attains immortality. Intonation: aa=low aa=high aa=high & drag

akaara ukaara makaara iti
pratyag-aanandaM bramha purushhaM praNava-svaruupam akaara ukaara makaara iti The blissful Supreme Being resides within, as the life principle in the form of OM. This OM consists of three syllables – A, U and M. It is supreme bliss and peace. Intonation: aa=low aa=high aa=high & drag

taanekadhaa sama-bharat- yamuktvaa muchyate yogii
tadetad-om-iti yamuktvaa muchyate yogii janma saMsaara bandhanaat Yogis who know this, chant it regularly and attain liberation by breaking the bonds of life and death. Intonation: aa=low aa=high aa=high & drag

OM namo naaraayaNaa-yeti mantro-paasakaH vaikuNTha-bhuvana-lokaM
gamishh-yati tadidaM paraM puNDariikaM viGYaana-ghanam Those who adore and worship this mantra attain the supreme abode of Vaikunta. Narayana’s seat is the lotus of the heart. This knowledge of the Lord is the highest wisdom that shines like lightning. Intonation: aa=low aa=high aa=high & drag

tasmaat-tadidaa-vanmaatram bramhaNyo madhu- suudanom
bramhaNyo devakii-putro bramhaNyo madhu- suudanom sarva-bhuutastham-ekaM naaraayaNam Sri Krishna, the son of Devaki, is the very embodiment of Brahma. He is adored as Madhusudhana – One who destroys the ego. He alone resides in all beings. Intonation: aa=low aa=high aa=high & drag

kaaraNa-ruupam-akaara parabramhom etad-atharva shiroyo.adhiite
praatara-dhiiyaano raatri- kR^itam paapaM naashayati He is the fundamental basis of everything. He, Himself, is causeless. When this teaching of the Atharva is contemplated on in the morning, it destroys the sin committed in the previous night. Intonation: aa=low aa=high aa=high & drag

saaya-madhiiyaano divasa- kR^itam paapaM naashayati
maadhyan-dinam-aadityaa- bhi-mukho.adhii-yaanaH (f) paJNcha-paata-kopa-paata- kaat-pramuchyate Chanting this in the evening destroys the sins committed in the day. If it is contemplated on at noon, while facing the Sun, one is released from anger & the onslaught of five great sins. Intonation: aa=low aa=high aa=high & drag

puNyam labhate naaraayaNa saayujyam-
sarva veda paaraayaNa puNyam labhate naaraayaNa saayujyam- avaapnoti naaraayaNa saayujyam-avaapnoti One who chants this Upanishad will attain the merit of the study of the entire Veda. He will ultimately attain oneness with the Lord Narayana (repeated for emphasis). Intonation: aa=low aa=high aa=high & drag
