The inspection was positive, fair and reflects the journey we are on……..

……. but the fact is we are an Academy that requires improvement.

If you always do what you’ve always done, you will always get what you’ve always got. (Henry Ford)
There are things we need to change and improve to become a “Good” Academy. We need to combine this with continuing to do the things that are working well for us.

Teaching & Learning – 3 (RI)
Variation in the quality of planning. Challenge of work not consistent enough. Oracy to be developed in the classroom. Problem solving not evident enough. Lessons could be more engaging – teachers could take more risks and not teach from the front too much. Action New style teacher planner to encompass the above. An expectation that filled in for all lessons or that above points included in lesson resources. Monitoring to drive this (starting with Drop Ins and Work Scrutiny, leading into Teacher Profiles). CPD carousels on the above.

Personal Development, Behaviour and Well Being – 3 (RI)
Persistent absenteeism to reduce. Pupil conduct during social times to improve. There are too many students in IE for too long doing unsuitable work that is not matched to their curricula. Action IE system to change? One proposal being considered is: the room could be split into 2: Red Card from lessons and Internal Exclusion. On Red Cards students will bring their work from the classroom, complete it and return to staff at the end of the lesson. They will then go to their next lesson. That evening they will do a 60 minute detention (which also brings in line with lates detention). If they receive 2 Red Cards in a day they will go into IE. IE means removal from lessons for a day for serious breaches of conduct. Teachers must provide work for students that should be in their lessons. Zero tolerance on aggressive behaviour at social times – FTE. Consider an in-house Alternative Provision to go with external. Teachers to set work so that curriculum is followed. For students that are regularly not coping in mainstream lessons; could be for 1 particular lesson, for short periods or for longer periods on a reduced curriculum to focus efforts.

Outcomes – 3 (RI) Data systems to track current performance need developing. Evidence of progress should be more prevalent in books. A culture of reading needs to be embedded across the school, as do common practices in literacy and numeracy. Action Target setting needs reviewing and tracking back to each AP – then Sisra is fully utilised. An individual flight-path 1-9 set on prior attainment can then compliment the KPI Attainment Age Appropriate standards. SLT and Middle Leaders to drive a huge focus on the quality of work in books (T&L monitoring: drop ins, work scrutiny, curriculum area reviews). New whole school literacy person to drive a crusade on reading and literacy standards (every student in KS3 on Accelerated Reader in form time and maybe 1 English lesson?).
8
L&M – 3 (RI) Pupil Premium and Y7 Catch Up Spends – track better, spend better and measure impact of spend better. CSE Training for staff and an increased awareness of Keeping Children Safe in Education. Action MA to organise an external review by a PP champion. Meanwhile conduct our own audit and prepare. Immediate refresher on both with further training for all staff organised for later in the year.
