2 Warm Up Think about what steps would be necessary to run a successful club. First you would have to decide what type of club you want. Then, you would have to think about what type of organization or structure your club would have. Lastly, your club will need a leaders 1. What are some different ways you could use to pick a leader? 2. How would you personally recommend picking a leader for your club?

5 The first president of the United States, George Washington, was elected on April 30, Does anyone know anything about George Washington as a person? Or the policies he enacted while in office? (turn and talk to discuss)

6 George Washington is known as the father of our country, can anyone infer how he earned that nickname? (turn and talk) Washington is known as the father of our country because he led the fight for independence, and was the countries first president.

7 Washington knew that his actions and decisions would set precedents that would help shape the nations future. Who can use context clues to help us define the word precedents? (Turn and talk) A precedent is something that is done or said that becomes an example for others to follow.

8 In Washington’s first years, he helped set up a court system, aided in adding the Bill of Rights to the Constitution, set the standard for how long a president should serve, and decided how our nation should relate to other nations.

9 Guided Practice As a class, we will popcorn read a passage titled “The Cabinet”. Upon completion of the reading, we will answer the following questions: (Page 247) What is the central idea of this passage? What are 2 details supporting the central idea? Are there any key vocabulary words? If so, define, and use it in a sentence.

10 Independent Practice Independently read a passage titled, “The Bill of Rights” (Page 248) and answer the following comprehension question: 1. What does the Bill of Rights provide?

11 Group Work You will receive a copy of the Bill of Rights. Browse over the amendments, and collectively agree on which amendment you find to be most important. Record which amendment you chose, an interpretation of that amendment, and why you believe that amendment is the most important.

12 Exit Ticket What were three important actions taken by Washington and the first Congress?

13 Homework Why do you think George Washington’s presidency was so important in the development of the young nation? Write a paragraph to explain.
