Exposition: the beginning of a novel or short story; introduction including the ‘hook’; sets the scene
Rising Action: the events of the plot; conflict, characters, and suspense are developed
Climax: the turning point of the story; the point at which the reader knows how the protagonist will end up; the moment of ‘exhale’
Falling Action: the events occurring from the time of the climax to the end of the story
Resolution/Denouement: the storyline ends; a sense of closure is achieved
