Clean Broken Glassware Collection & Disposal Guidelines
Remember – clean glass only! No odors, no needles, no chemical debris Disposal Process: Use sturdy cardboard box to collect. Tape bottom of box before use. Once filled, close the inner liner (if there is one). Replace lid (or close box) and tape it closed. Indicate “CLEAN BROKEN GLASS FOR RECYCLING” on the outer box. Move box to location within lab that is close to trash. Custodial Services should remove box during evening rounds. If box is not removed within 2-3 days, place a request for pickup via Atlas, Service Requests. Empty, 3xRinsed chemical bottles Example of boxes to use Clean vials, tubes, slides

Chemical Sharps Collection & Disposal Guidelines
Needles (w/ or w/o syringe attached); Razor Blades; Pipette Tips contaminated during use with chemicals Collect in puncture proof container with compatible materials Label with Red Tag: “Chemically contaminated sharps” & at least 3 chemical constituents check off TOXIC as hazard Container closed and stored within or near a labeled Satellite Accumulation Area (SAA) Examples to keep separate from general sharps: - Pyrophoric chemicals (lithium, magnesium, potassium, etc) - Heavy metals (mercury, chromium, lead, arsenic, etc.) - Strong acids (sulfuric & nitric acid) - Acutely Hazardous (P-Listed) EXAMPLE Chemical Sharps: acetone, methanol, phenol, ethanol x EHS can provide containers, request at waste pickup site Click “Pails and Drums” at bottom, then choose from dropdown below Large container shown is “Sharps – 20L” Smaller sharps container is “Sharps-1G (Mayo)”

Saturated wipes & paper towels, contaminated gloves and glassware, broken glass, spill cleanup materials Collect in proper container with compatible materials Label with Red Tag: “Chemically contaminated solids” & at least 3 chemical constituents check off associated hazard(s) Container closed and stored within or near a labeled Satellite Accumulation Area (SAA) Examples to keep separate from general solids: - Pyrophoric chemicals (lithium, magnesium, potassium, etc) - Heavy metals (mercury, chromium, lead, arsenic, etc.) - Strong acids (sulfuric & nitric acid) - Acutely Hazardous (P-Listed) EXAMPLE: Chemical Solids: acetone, thiols, chromium, oil x EHS can provide containers, request at waste pickup site Click “Pails and Drums” at bottom, then choose from dropdown below Black pail shown is “5 gallon bucket” Smaller sharps container is “1 Gallon (mayo) jar”
