MyPlate Icon Part of a larger communications initiative based on 2010 Dietary Guidelines for Americans to help consumers make better food choices. Is designed to remind Americans to eat healthfully; it is not intended to change consumer behavior alone. A way to illustrates the five food groups using a familiar mealtime visual, a place setting. FRUITS Any fruit or 100% fruit juice counts as part of the fruit.
Fruits may be fresh, canned, frozen, or dried. You need cups per day.

Vegetables 2.5-3 cups every day
Can be eaten raw, canned, cooked, dried, juiced, pureed

Grains 6-8 oz daily Examples : wheat , rice, oats, cornmeal, barley
Foods made from grains: bread, pasta, oatmeal, cereals, tortillas, and grits. Grains are divided into 2 subgroups: Whole Grains: Examples : whole-wheat flour, bulgur (cracked wheat), oatmeal, whole cornmeal, and brown rice. 2. Refined Grains: Examples: white flour, cornmeal, white bread, and white rice.

PROTEIN Examples: 5-6 0z per day. What does 1 ounce look like:
poultry pork beef lamb goat tofu seafood venison beans & peas eggs nuts & seeds 5-6 0z per day. What does 1 ounce look like: slice of cheese in wrapper, 1 egg, 2 ounces of nuts or seeds

DAIRY What does 1 cup (8 ounces) look like?
Examples: cows milk goats milk camels milk yogurt cottage cheese How much do you need? 3 cups every day…. 24 ounces What does 1 cup (8 ounces) look like? 1 cup of milk, 1 cup yogurt, 1 cup soymilk, 0r 1 ½ ounces of natural cheese

OILS Some examples: canola oil, corn oil, cottonseed oil, olive oil, safflower oil, soybean oil, and sunflower oil. No cholesterol in these because they are from plants. Oils are not a food group but we do need them! 5 teaspoons day! What are some examples of foods that are mostly oils??? Mayonnaise salad dressings margarine
