Animal Facts Description The Platypus is brown but its bill is gray. It is about 16 to 22 inches including tail about 5 to 4 inches. It weights about 5 pounds. It has thick brown fur. The male Platypus has hollow spurs behind each ankle. The spurs are connected to poison glands. Diet A Platypus is a carnivore because it eats insects, shrimp tadpoles, fish eggs, frogs and small fish. The Platypus does not have teeth. They chew gravel to break down their food. Movement The Platypus has webbed feet and a broad flat tail so it can swim. The Platypus has claws on its front feet and hind legs. The webs can be extended beyond the claws. The burrows are in Australia and they are about 85 feet long. Life Cycle The platypus is born in a egg it takes 8 to12 weeks to hatch. There are 1 to 3 eggs. When it does hatch it has no fur it is 2.5 centimeters. They stay with there mom for 4 or 5 mouths.
