3 Getting around The Hamburg public transport system is called 'HVV' and includes all buses, trains, and harbor ferries. DESY, train station and Airport are all in zone 'AB' as well as the centre of the town with all points of touristic interest. A 'single trip' ticket is what you will need to get anywhere in the city, it enables you to reach your destination directly using a combination of tram, bus and ferries (if necessary). Tickets can be bought in buses from the driver, just name your destination or on ticket machines at the tram station (again put your destination on the screen) a 'single trip' ticket is at 3,20 EUR Get a map here: HVV map Further information: Ticket type overview HVV overview and network plans Yes, of cause there is an app :) HVV App IOS HVV App ANDROID Tip: You can use the harbor ferries as a 'poor mans' harbor trip and hop on and off at interesting locations Harbor ferry map (pdf) (need a day ticket for an interrupted journey)

4 Bike rental There are approx. 70 bike rental stations spread all over the city of Hamburg, usually near tram stations and points of interest. One is on the DESY campus (near building 6) another one at the tram station 'Othmarschen' The first 30 min. are free, every additional minute costs 8ct. up to a max. of 12,- EUR per day. Registration is 5,- EUR but it's credited to your account You can rent more than one bike at a time (!) Check out the website to register etc. Stadtrad Tip: A trip to the heart of the city is no problem but you will mainly follow huge main roads. For a more relaxing bike experience you can go straight down to the river Elbe at Altona and turn right, following partly a bike path (formerly towpath) starting right after Oevelgoenne leading out of town: bicycle path map (german PDF)

5 Facilities Shopping (see map), there are a couple of supermarkets, a bakery and a drugstore on Osdorfer Landstr. In walking distance to DESY campus. On wednesday there is an outdoor market at the same location. Waitzstrasse is a local shopping street next to tram station 'Othmarschen' Altona was an independent city until (under administration of the danish monarchy from 1640 – 1864) and hence has it's own town centre starting right at the train station 'Altona' with a pedestrian zone. Take the exit 'Ottenser Hauptstrasse' and you will find plenty little shops, cafes etc.
