Who we are? Babes-Bolyai University (UBB) – largest Romanian University Located in Cluj-Napoca, Est. 1581 students – BSc, MSc and PhD levels Programs in Romanian, Hungarian, German and English 21 Faculties ~ permanent staff (research & academia) Faculty of Environmental Science and Engineering Est. 2002 Offers programs on all 3 levels for Environmental Science and Environmental Engineering: 2 BSc programs 4 MSc programs 1 PhD program

Who we are? Atmospheric remote sensing laboratory within the Faculty of Environmental Science and Engineering Established in 2008 with support from national (ROLINET) and international (RADO) funding and further supported by UBB and national funding (MADECIP) Staff: 1 assoc. prof., 2 assist. prof., 2 researcher III, 2 PhD stud. Main objectives: investigate the composition of the lower atmosphere (aerosols and gases). investigate atmospheric processes such as gas and aerosol dynamics, radiative effects, effects on climate, cloud formation etc. integrate remote sensing data into risk and impact assessment studies (modelling)

The beginning … The RADO Project Romanian Atmospheric 3D Observatory 3 major components: Observation Network: ROLINET (ROmanian LIdar NETwork) +implementation of new instruments and modeling tools Data Center: data collection, storage, processing and analysis Science Center:education,information, training, publicity, dialog Why 3D? Vertical profiles (LIDAR and sunphotometer) Ground-based monitoring (point-monitors) Satellite imagery data

Multi-wavelength Raman and Depolarization LIDAR (in EARLINET) 3β (355nm, 532 nm, 1064 nm) + 2α (387nm, 607 nm) + 1δ (532 nm) Applications: Presence of aerosol layers (up to 15 km) Dynamics of lofted aerosol layers Aerosol optical and microphysical properties

CIMEL 318 CE Sun tracking photometer (in NASA AERONET) Retrieval of: AOD (aerosol optical depth) water vapor column Angstrom exponent fine/coarse aerosol fractions inversion products

In situ instrumentation
DUSTTRAK™ DRX Aerosol Monitor Model 8533 simultaneous measurements of size segregated mass fraction concentrations (PM1, PM2.5, Respirable/PM4, PM10/Thoracic, and TPM) over a wide concentration range (0.001–150 mg/m3) in real time.

Computational and software capabilities
1 HPC with computation power up to 60 Tflops (Rpeak) Computation nodes 50 (each with 2 proc. X 10 cores); Computation nodes 12 (each with 2 proc. X 10 cores + GPU ); Computation nodes 12 (each with 2 proc. X 10 cores + Xeon Phi coprocessor) Connectivity: InfiniBand FDR (54Gbps) Common storage component: 72TB raw Software: WRF Chem (to be installed on the HPC within SAMIRA) Local dispersion model: ISC-AERMOD (up to 50 km) Gaussian plume dispersion model Predicts air concentrations around point or area sources using emission rates (flux), topography data and meteorological conditions
