Your High School Travel Plan
“Parent Approved Student Learning Plan” OR “4-Year Planner” Say, “Welcome to the presentation about Your High School Travel Plan! This travel plan is often called either a “Parent Approved Student Learning Plan” or a “4 Year Planner”. Completing this document is your next step to help you reach your next educational destination---high school!”

Parent Approved Student Learning Plan (4 -Year Planner)
An outline of classes you plan to take May be revised each year during registration Helps you think through choices and make informed decisions Does not enroll you in any classes—just a tool to plan ahead Say, “The Parent Approved Student Learning Plan is developed to outline learning plans for high school and post-high school options. The plan does not register a student for any course. An appropriate time for annual review is prior to registration. A signature on a high school registration form will indicate approval of revisions to the original Student Learning Plan as a result of high school registration choices. You will be filling out your freshman year high school registration form in just a few weeks so you may want to make a copy of your plan so you can refer back to it as your register for your 9th grade classes!”

WHY? All successful travelers create a plan
Focuses you on choices, prerequisites, options Developed with help from parent and/or counselor Reviewed and potentially changed each year during registration It’s the law (Idaho Board of Education, , Thoroughness Section) Say, “Some of you may wonder why you have to plan out your courses for the next four years of high school…Remember heading to high school is a journey and all successful travelers create a plan. You have limited time and a limited number of choices once you enter high school. This plan will help you be prepared to make the most of your limited time and focus on the course of study you are really interested in. This plan also helps you get input and guidance from parents and teachers. Remember---the plan can be updated each year. Finally, the last reason why you need to do the 4 year planner is that the Idaho State Board of Education requires all 8th graders to complete it prior to entering high school.”

When is my plan due? Final Plan must be given to your Advisory Teacher
Due date: Monday, March 6th Signatures needed (student & parent signatures) Fill the form out in pencil first. After your final class selections have been made, trace it with a pen. The first advisory class that all turn in their completed 4-Year Planners to their advisory teacher will get a sweet treat!! Say “All parent approved student learning plans are due on ______. Please turn your plan into __________” Option---You may have students write the due date on the top of the form….

Required Courses English (8 credits) Mathematics (6 credits) Science (6 lab credits) Global Perspectives (1 credit) US History (4 credits) Amer. Government (2 credits) Economics (1 credit) Speech or Debate (1 credit) Health (1 credit) PE (2 credits) Humanities (2 credits) Electives (22+ credits) The required courses are “filled out for you” on the 4-Year Planner Total credits for graduation = 56 credits Summer School, Night School or Correspondence Courses: recommended for remediation (failed classes) only due to the increased number of credits available through block scheduling Next, have students look over the form. Say “Notice that some courses have been filled in for you. These are the required classes needed to graduate.”

Class of 2017: Graduation Requirements
Passing score on ISATs: Reading (220); Lang. (226); Math (238) Required for graduation, but can be taken as an elective at any time: 2 credits (at least)—PE (Page 43) 2 credits—Humanities (page 11) 1 credit—Speech (page 17) 6 Math credits (page 31) Including a passing grade in HS Math 1A/1B, HS Math IIA/IIB 2 semesters of required Math must be taken & passed during the Senior year 6 Lab Science Credits (page 47) Senior Project College Entrance Exam (State mandated – ACT, SAT, etc.) Note: World Language credits are NOT a high school graduation requirement, but two (2) years of a language are required for most out-of-state 4-year universities. One year of a World Language will meet the Humanities requirement for graduation.

Electives! You fill in the remaining courses with the electives you plan to take while in high school Electives = 22+ Credits Total # of Credits needed for Graduation = 56 1 credit = 1 semester (1/2 yr) All the options for electives can be found in the high school course description handbook Use the table of contents to navigate the high school course description handbook (page 1) Pay close attention to any CTE and other prerequisite courses & grade level restrictions: Examples: *Drawing/Painting A–Page 60 *Intro to Culinary Arts–Page 89 *Advanced Stagecraft—Page 42 Say, “You will notice you have many blanks on your plan. This is where you will fill in the electives you plan to take. Electives are classes that you choose. They should be classes you are interested in. Use your high school course description handbook to look up classes that may be interesting to you. Hint: As you look through the large high school course description handbook use a scratch piece of paper keep a running list of all the classes that sound interesting the page number the course description is found on. Use the table of contents to navigate the high school course description handbook.” (Hand out the high school course description handbooks.) Say, “You will want to look through this course description handbook with your parent (describe where they can access a copy online or how they can check out a copy from a teacher.)” Say, “Your parent will need to sign the bottom of your parent approved student learning plan before you turn it in.”

CLEAR AS MUD ?? Here’s an example of a completed 4-year plan… (Pass out the copy of the parent approved student learning plan i.e. 4 year planner). Have students fill in the general information at the top of their form: student name, middle school counselor, middle school and the high school that they plan to attend.
