Objective Illustrate and Document the Elements and Principles of Design
5
Outline/Vocab (on your course outline sheet)
A. Elements of design 1. Space 2. Line 3. Form 4. Texture 5. Color a. Color wheel b. Color schemes i. Monochromatic ii. Analogous iii. Complimentary iv. Split-complimentary v. Triadic vi. Neutral vii. Accented Neutral
6
Outline/Vocab (on your course outline sheet)
B. Principles of design 1. Proportion 2. Scale 3. Balance 4. Rhythm 5. Emphasis a. Focal Point b. Center of Attention 6. Unity/variety
7
Purpose BOTH are the basis to any design creation
Elements of design = act as tools that help us create designs are “background factors” when working with principles Principles of design = guidelines to follow when working w/ the elements help us USE the elements!
8
Elements Use the provided project sheet to write the following definitions: Line – visual direction of a design Vertical, Horizontal, Diagonal Form – outlined edges of a 3-D object Realistic, Abstract, Geometric, Free Space – area provided for a specific purpose Large vs. Small Texture – a surface’s tactile quality Tactile vs. Visual Color – the most important element! Primary, Secondary Value vs Intensity!!
9
Principles Proportion – the ratio of one part to another part (through size, pattern, color) Scale – the size of an object in relation to the size of the person using the space Balance – a sense of equilibrium Symmetrical and Asymmetrical (Formal vs. Informal) Emphasis – center of attention Rhythm – leads the eye from one part to another Repetition, Radiation, Gradation, Transition Unity & Variety – same and different (patterns, colors, etc…) together in a design
10
Color Color Wheel
11
Color Wheel Primary Colors Yellow, Red, and Blue
Cannot be made by mixing other colors All other colors are made from these 3 colors
12
Color Wheel Secondary Colors Orange, Green, Violet
Made by mixing equal amounts of two primary colors Red + Yellow= Orange Yellow + Blue = Green Blue + Red= Violet
13
Color Wheel Tertiary Colors
Blue-Violet, Red-Violet, Blue-Green, Yellow-Green, Yellow-Orange, and Red-Orange Made by mixing equal amounts of a primary and a secondary color
14
Color Color Schemes Monochromatic Analogous Complimentary
Split-complimentary Triadic Neutral Accented Neutral
15
Color Schemes Monochromatic
Tints and Shades of one color on the color wheel
16
Color Schemes Analogous
3 to 5 Hues next to each other on the color wheel
17
Color Schemes Complementary
Two hues that are directly opposite on the color wheel
18
Color Schemes Split- Complementary
Three colors: One hue with two hues on each side of its complement.
19
Color Schemes Triadic Three colors: Equal distance apart on color-wheel
20
Color Schemes Neutral All colors not found on color wheel (black, white, gray, beige, brown)
21
Color Schemes Accented Neutral Neutral Color plus one hue
