How to help your students obtain their Child Development Classroom Assistant Permit Presented by: Laura Nealy Linden High School

2 Child Development Permits are available at various levels.
Each level has one or more ways to qualify. Individuals must meet all of the requirements listed in one of the available options. Individuals should review all available options and complete the one that best reflects their own education and/or experience.  CHILD DEVELOPMENT ASSISTANT PERMIT Authorization A Child Development Assistant Permit authorizes the holder to care for and assist in the development and instruction of children in a child care and development program under the supervision of a Child Development Permit (CDP) Associate Teacher, CDP Teacher, CDP Master Teacher, CDP Site Supervisor, or CDP Program Director. Requirements for the Child Development Assistant Permit.  To qualify for the Child Development Assistant Permit, individuals must satisfy all of the requirements listed in one of the following options: Option 1: Complete six semester units of early childhood education or child development course work School-Age Emphasis under this option requires that three of the six semester units in early childhood education/child development be completed in school-age course work Option 2 Complete an approved Home Economics and Related Occupations (HERO) or Regional Occupation Program (ROP) in Child Development Related Occupations

3 What your students need:
1. Route: Option 2 written in upper right hand corner of the application 2. Program Completer Certification- we get ours from our county department of ed years old or older 4. Completed application (form 41-4) make sure you are using the most current application- found on line Only fill out portions 1, 2, and 4, 5, and 7 5. $100 money order for processing fees: 6. First-time applicants must submit a completed Live Scan receipt (form 41-LS) verifying that fingerprints have been taken and fees have been paid. Out-of-state residents must submit two fingerprint cards (FD- 258) and fingerprint processing fees in lieu of a Live Scan receipt

4 What your students DO NOT need:
The application directions state that Individuals applying for a Child Development Permit must submit a completed application packet consisting of all of the following: 1. Official transcripts verifying course work and/or letters verifying experience appropriate to the permit type (as they are graduating from high school not college the state doesn't want to see high school transcripts) 2.  Course Work Requirements- they are in high school so the state doesn’t want any of this 3. All course work must be degree-applicable (associate degree or higher) and non-remedial 4. All course work must be completed with a grade of “C” or better (“pass” and “credit” grades meet this requirement) 5. All core course work must meet a minimum unit requirement of three semester units or four quarter units (see Terms and Definitions) 6. All course work must be completed at a regionally-accredited college or university Option 2 and use of Program Completer Certification over-rides the need for any of the above.

5 The form page 1- what to fill in
Route To: Option 2 Personal Information Credential Type- click on arrow and then on “I am applying for my first California Credential Permit.” Click on arrow for Child Development Permit and then on Assistant. Leave the rest blank.

6 Page 2 You don’t do anything with this page.
You are not renewing and the rest is instruction

7 Page 3 All boxes should be marked No

8 Page 4 Still checking No Check I agree
Employing Agency Code only fill out if the student has a job lined up

9 Page 5 You should have students watch a video on mandatory reporting, or at least explain what this means.

10 Why should you encourage your students to do this?
As a Career Technical Educator you are preparing your students to walk out of your classroom and into a job, this permit helps them do that. The state will remove this level of permit if you as California teachers do not start having students apply. Each year there are under 5 applicants if any. “Program Completers” and “Career Ready Students” strengthens your program and DOCUMENTS your programs success.
