1
Discuss with your neighbor, how you started as one cell and are now made up of over 3 trillion cells.
2
Controls when cells are supposed to divide.
The Cell Cycle Controls when cells are supposed to divide.
3
What is a cycle?
4
cy·cles plural1. repeated sequence of events: a sequence of events that is repeated again and again, especially a causal sequence
5
Chromosomes Chromosomes are made up of DNA
They have 2 sister chromatids Chromatids are attached by a centromere. 1 Sister Chromatid Centromere
6
The Cell Cycle The cell cycle consists of four phases: G1 phase
S phase G2 phase M phase INTERPHASE:is made up of G1, S, and G2 phases Cell Division: is also known as M phase. Cell division is made up of Mitosis and Cytokinesis.
7
G1 Phase G1 phase is where cells: Are increasing in size
Making new proteins
8
S Phase S phase is where: Chromosomes are replicated DNA is being made
9
G2 Phase G2 phase is where: Organelles are being produced
Cell is preparing for mitosis
10
M Phase M phase is where: The cell begins the process of dividing.
Prophase Metaphase Anaphase Telophase Cytokinesis
11
Cancer Cancer- is uncontrolled cell growth.
How are the cell cycle and cancer related?
12
Checkpoint Animation
13
Think-Pair-Share Why do your cells divide?
How do your cells know when to divide? Are your cells the same size as they were when you were 2 years old?
