1 Strategies for Taking the State Assessments

2 The Night Before the Test
* Go to bed on time. * Talk to your parents or teachers about any concerns that you might have about the test.

3 The Morning of the Test Eat a good breakfast.

4 Pace Yourself During the Test
Don’t spend too much time on any one question. Do your best and then move on. Be sure to go back to those questions you skipped.

5 Answering Questions Read the question and all answer choices before marking anything.

6 Answering Questions Answer every question. Make the most intelligent guess you can. If you can eliminate two wrong answers, your chance of choosing the right answer is greater.

7 Answering Questions Don’t second guess yourself by changing your answers unless you are 100% sure. Remember: Your first guess is usually right.

8 Reading Passages read the questions first.
If the test requires you to read passages and then answer questions about what you read, read the questions first. By doing this, you will know what you are looking for as you read. This also helps you go faster on the test.

9 Math Computation When using scratch paper on a math test, double check to make sure that you have copied the problem correctly!

10 Math Computation Line up place value correctly on your scratch paper (thousands, hundreds, tens, ones) or the answer will be incorrect.

11 Math Computation If your answer does not match one of the choices, reread the problem, recopy the numbers, and try solving it again.

12 Relax If your eyes get tired from looking at the screen, take a quick moment and breathe. Try to relax and trust that you can do it!

13 Think Positive!

14 When You Finish Go back and check your work.
Make sure every question is answered

15 Good Luck! You’ve got this!
