1 A Journey Through The Psalms
Wisdom From God A Journey Through The Psalms

2 Psalm 2 – The Begotten Son
A psalm about an earthly king? David? Solomon? A psalm secondarily about the Messiah? A psalm primarily about the Messiah?

3 A Psalm In Four Strophes
What is a strophe? A division of a poem containing stanzas of varying line-lengths. Originally the opening section of a Greek ode, followed by the antistrophe and the epode.

4 Strophe 1 – vs. 1-3 In which the nations rebel against God
“Why are the nations in an uproar and the peoples devising a vain thing? The kings of the earth take their stand and the rulers take counsel together against the Lord and against His Anointed, saying, “Let us tear their fetters apart and cast away their cords from us!”

5 Uproar Of the GOYIM Nations, anyone other than Israel. The heathen hordes. Acts 4:25-26 – “…Why did the Gentiles rage, and the peoples devise futile things? The kings of the earth took their stand, and the rulers were gathered together against the Lord and against His Christ.”

6 Chiastic Construction
From Greek letter CHI – shaped like an X “nations in an uproar/peoples devising a vain thing” “kings…take their stand/ rulers take counsel together “tear their fetters apart/ cast away their cords from us.

7 Rebellion: Against God and Christ
Open rebellion Philippians 3:18 – “For many walk, of whom I often told you, and now tell you even weeping, that they are enemies of the cross of Christ….” James 4:4 – “You adulteresses, do you not know that friendship with the world is hostility toward God? Therefore whoever wishes to be a friend of the world makes himself an enemy of God.”

8 Strophe 2 – V. 4-6 “He who sits in the heavens laughs, the Lord scoffs at them. Then He will speak to them in His anger and terrify them in His fury, saying, “But as for Me, I have installed My King upon Zion, My holy mountain.” God demonstrates His scorn toward those who would foment rebellion.

9 Does God Really Scoff? Proverbs 3:34 -- Though He scoffs at the scoffers, yet He gives grace to the afflicted. When scoffers scoff at God, God’s scoffing is the true scoff! They have no reason to scoff against God except their own ignorance and prejudice.

10 God’s Anger And Fury …speak to them in His anger/ terrify them in Hid fury Is God’s anger justified? He offers free gift of salvation He gives grace and mercy His offer is sneered at and rejected His anger/fury are justified!

11 God Has Installed His King
We have NO choice in the matter God is Sovereign #Notmysavior ??? Philippians 2:10 – “…so that at the name of Jesus every knee will bow, of those who are in heaven and on earth and under the earth….”

12 Isaiah 45:22-23 “Turn to Me and be saved, all the ends of the earth; for I am God, and there is no other. I have sworn by Myself, the word has gone forth from My mouth in righteousness and will not turn back, that to Me every knee will bow, every tongue will swear allegiance.”

13 Strophe 3 – v. 7-9 The anointing of God’s Son
“I will surely tell of the decree of the Lord: He said to Me, ‘You are My Son, today I have begotten you.’ ‘Ask of Me, and I will surely give the nations as Your inheritance, and the very ends of the earth as Your possession. You shall break them with a rod of iron, You shall shatter them like earthenware.’”

14 What Jesus Said God made a decree declaring Jesus as Son
Today I have begotten You – Jesus was begotten by decree Anointed as the Messiah Messiah = The Anointed There was a moment in time when God anointed the Son to be the Lord and Savior

15 What God Said “Ask of Me, and I will surely give the nations as Your inheritance, and the very ends of the earth as Your possession.” “You shall break them with a rod of iron, You shall shatter them like earthenware” God has the power to award the nations to the Son. The Son has the power to subjugate all the nations. Dominion.

16 The Begetting Of The Christ
John 1:14,18 – “And the Word became flesh, and dwelt among us, and we saw His glory, glory as of the only begotten from the Father, full of grace and truth….No one has seen God at any time; the only begotten God who is in the bosom of the father, He has explained Him.”

17 The Begetting Of The Christ
John 1:14,18 – “And the Word became flesh, and dwelt among us, and we saw His glory, glory as of the only begotten from the Father, full of grace and truth….No one has seen God at any time; the only begotten God who is in the bosom of the father, He has explained Him.”

18 Strophe 4 – V. 10-12 A warning to the nations
“Now therefore, O kings, show discernment; take warning, O judges of the earth. Worship the Lord with reverence and rejoice with trembling. Do homage to the Son, that He not become angry, and you perish in the way, for His wrath may soon be kindled. How blessed are all who take refuge in Him!”

19 An Open Invitation Show discernment! Take warning!
Worship with reverence! Rejoice with trembling! Kiss the Son (worship, do homage)

20 A Warning and a Blessing
Warning of the wrath of the Son We rarely hear of the potential for wrathful Jesus! The blessing though: “How blessed are all who take refuge in Him!”

21 An Offering of Refuge “Come to Me all who are weary and heavy- laden, and I will give you rest. Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For My yoke is easy and My burden is light.” Matthew 11:28-30
