What is a Search Engine? Each search engine keeps a database of sites & keywords Webcrawlers/spiders gather info Each generates a list of results Bing, Google, Yahoo, etc. Results may vary between engines Note that at the top of many results pages are ADS!

Metasearch Engine Sends query to other search engines & shows you results from all in one place Dogpile & Kayak Go to Search for Batman Disadvantage: It chooses what it thinks is the best results from the search engines

Boolean Search Recipes AND Chicken AND Spaghetti Tennis NOT Wimbledon
Use of AND, OR, NOT In uppercase Use of + or – Use of Advanced Search Recipes AND Chicken AND Spaghetti Match ALL terms in a document Tennis NOT Wimbledon Excludes the 2nd term from the document Dogs OR Cats “global warming” or “greenhouse effects” Looks for either or both on sites

Evaluate this Site Relevance & Reliability Does it fit your research? Is it accurate? Up to date? Does it come from a trusted source? Professional Layout Is site organized? Spelling/grammar correct? Info might not be reliable Validity & Bias Are they trying to sell you something? Change your opinion? Check other sources to see if it’s valid info Authority Author’s credentials Can you contact/ them? Evaluate the Quality of the Information
