4 Sun Yat-sen (or Sun Yixian) Chiang Kai-shek (or Jiang Jieshi)
The Nationalists established the Republic of China, led by Sun Yat-sen and later Chiang Kai-shek. Sun Yat-sen (or Sun Yixian) Chiang Kai-shek (or Jiang Jieshi)

5 Many of China’s peasants believed the Nationalists were corrupt and supported the opposing Communist Party, led by Mao Zedong. Flag of the Chinese Communist Party 

6 As a result, the Chinese Civil War occurred between the Communists and the Nationalists from 1927 to 1949.

7 The Communists won the Chinese Civil War and established the People’s Republic of China.

8 A major reason the Communists were successful in this war was because they promised land to the peasants and had their support.

9 Taiwan’s first president
After losing the Chinese Civil War, the Nationalists fled to the island of Taiwan (which claims its independence from China today). Chiang Kai-shek; Taiwan’s first president
