2. Argumentative Essay – Step 1
Read the documents and answer the questions
As you are answering the questions, you are ANALYZING the documents!

3. Argumentative Essay - Step 2
Divide the documents into which sides they support – Was American Expansion Abroad Justified?
Mark the documents – Plus if demonstrate justification (imperialism)
Negative if they do not support justification (anti-imperialism)
Now make your decision, was America justified or not?

4. Argumentative Essay – Step 3, Introduction
In the introduction discuss:
Time Period
Where
Something interesting about the time
period – fact, person, generalization
Use historical context from the question
as a guide – may loosely rephrase
Last sentence of introduction is YOUR CLAIM (Thesis) – USE THE TASK AS A GUIDELINE TO CLAIM!

5. Argumentative Essay – Step 4
Body Paragraph #1
Present your Point of view with a topic sentence stating your opinion.
Provide outside information (from notes)
Give Evidence (from documents),
Analysis (how do your documents prove your point – Use the Questions you answered or bullet points from the documents to guide you)
Significance (repeat your point of view and its importance – relate it back to your topic sentence)

6. Argumentative Essay – Step 5
Body Paragraph #2 (First ½ of paragraph)
State the other point of view (P)in about 2-3 sentences (phrases like: on the other hand; some may believe, the other side might argue, other opinions may state … can help you get started)
Use a document (E) that would support the other side and analyze (use the questions again (A)

7. Argumentative Essay – Step 6
Second ½ of paragraph
Then DISPROVE that opinion (P). Explain why that point of view is incorrect.
Use your documents to disprove their point (E).
Analyze (A)
Show the significance (S) of why your opinion is correct is a summary sentence. Be strong in your beliefs that your opinion is correct!

8. Argumentative Essay – Step 7 - Conclusion
Reverse your introduction
Begin with your claim
Explain why claim in significant
End with a general statement about time period
*Do not use “I” any where in the essay!
