Hartley Demographics Location- 12 miles south of Dalhart, 70 miles north of Amarillo Population- 540 Area 7 sq mi. Elevation- 3,907ft. Hartley ISD PK A Classification Total enrollment-230 9-12 enrollment-65 70 transfer students 60% Hispanic, 40% caucasian/other Blue-collar workers- Farmers, ranchers, dairy, feedlot, mechanics

Sharing Athletes With Other Sports Is Not the Problem
Hartley is unique because we don’t have volleyball or football. Cross Country is our fall sport. I’m the only girls Coach.

Last Year HS Girls Athletics
18 enrolled in athletics (9-12) 11/18 ran XC 13/18 played basketball 14/18 ran track 8/18 played tennis Most girls were involved in 2 to 3 other sports throughout the year. Also, most were in one or more of the following: OAP, academic UIL, cheerleading, FFA.

How Did It Work? Our athletic period was first period so we had practice at 6:30am-8:45.(Boys and Girls) Bused transfer kids from Dalhart at 6:00am to get them there on time. I took XC athletes for workout Boys Coach took all off-season athletes and did weight workout

How Did It Work cont. Assistant Coach worked with basketball girls on skills and drills after weights. Boys Coach worked on skills and drills with basketball boys after weights. Tuesday, Wednesday,Thursday, XC would work on weights after off season finished. Cafeteria workers were gracious enough to hold breakfast for XC runners who wanted to eat if time allowed after workout.

How Did it Work cont. Positives- The kids responded and had more energy of the morning. They were free to work or make appointments in the afternoon. Negatives- Working out in the dark, long run days, boys had a hard time finishing because of the distance we traveled to do the long runs.
