18 On the girl’s brown legs there were many small white scars
On the girl’s brown legs there were many small white scars. I was thinking, Do those scars cover the whole of you, like the stars and the moons on your dress? I thought that would be pretty too, and I ask you right here please to agree with me that a scar is never ugly. That is what the scar makers want us to think.

19 But you and I, we must make an agreement to defy them
But you and I, we must make an agreement to defy them. We must see all scars as beauty. Okay? This will be our secret. Because take it from me, a scar does does not form on the dying. A scar means, I survived. From Little Bee by Chris Cleave.

20 We light this chalice as a symbol of our own scars and our own survival.

41 In a few breaths’ time I will speak some sad words to you
In a few breaths’ time I will speak some sad words to you. But you must hear them the same way we have agreed to see scars now. Sad words are just another beauty. A sad story means, this storyteller is alive. The next thing you know, something fine will happen to her, something marvelous, and then she will turn around and smile. 47 #672 Singing the Living Tradition
Anne Sexton wrote “Look to your heart that flutters in and out like a moth. God is not indifferent to your need. You have a thousand prayers. But God has one.” #672 Singing the Living Tradition

48 We give thanks for those moments when we can feel that we live in a world that is not indifferent to our need. We all have so many needs– a thousand prayers– a thousand needs– that really only need one answer: let the world not be indifferent. And may we live and be with each other in the way that shows this truth whatever the day brings: that neither are we indifferent to each other. – Judith Meyer

Closing Words Becky Harrison ASUUC Board of Trustees

59 If you suddenly and unexpectedly feel joy, don't hesitate
If you suddenly and unexpectedly feel joy, don't hesitate. Give in to it. There are plenty of lives and whole towns destroyed or about to be. We are not wise, and not very often kind. And much can never be redeemed. Still, life has some possibility left.

60 Anyway, that's often the case.
Perhaps this is its way of fighting back, that sometimes something happens better than all the riches or power in the world. It could be anything, but very likely you notice it in the instant when love begins. Anyway, that's often the case. Anyway, whatever it is, don't be afraid of its plenty. Joy is not made to be a crumb. --Mary Oliver
