Course Description This reading class is designed to improve reading performance. The reading program focuses on: comprehension, vocabulary, decoding and fluency. Two research based programs are utilized: Orton Gillingham and Leveled Literacy Intervention. Student placement within programs is based on assessment that determines specific individual needs so student progress is monitored closely.

Orton Gillingham Approach to teaching reading and spelling
Explicitly teaches the connection between letters and sounds Multisensory approach incorporating auditory, visual and kinesthetic pathways

Leveled Literacy Intervention
Fast paced, small group instruction (six or less per group) Texts are matched to reading level Original and engaging texts Books are sequenced to build a reading vocabulary high frequency words in addition to words that need to be decoded Provides explicit instruction in comprehension

Class Assessments Grades are O (outstanding), S (satisfactory), U (unsatisfactory)
Classwork Book discussions Reading notebooks Written responses Running records
