Totem poles: Tall posts carved and painted with a series of animal symbols associated with a particular family or clan (coat of arms) Erected in front of a dwelling for identification and a sign of prestige Wood carvings feet high Designs are very complex with every foot having an animal and the more complex totem poles have many colors

Pueblo (village) Lived in adobe (sun-dried clay) homes The important part was the Kiva (circular underground structure) Pueblo Pottery (Maria Martinez) Painted pottery Each community had it’s own shape and designs Black outline and geometric shapes Bold designs over a cream colored base

Navajo Southwest tribe Weaving learned through male Pueblo weavers
Navajo women began making cloth with looms in the 18th century Spanish and Mexico settlers moved into the southwest and introduced new designs and patterns 19th century-using European cloth and dyes matching quality of best looms in Europe Closeness of the weave, rich, vibrant colors and bold design
