1 Understanding Art: All art – including photography – relates to the viewer on one of two levels either emotionally or intellectually.

2 Which is a more powerful response…
an intellectual response or an emotional one? Make a case for one or the other.

3 The following elicits an intellectual response:
The Rwandan Genocide refers to the 1994 mass killing of hundreds of thousands of Rwanda's Tutsis and Hutu political moderates by the Hutu dominated government under the Hutu Power ideology. Over the course of approximately 100 days, at least 500,000 people were killed, according to the estimate of Human Rights Watch. Other estimates of the death toll have ranged between 500,000 and 1,000,000, or as much as 20% of the total population of the country.

The following elicits an emotional response: Hutu Man with Machete Scars 5/94 James Nachtwey

5 Robert Plutchik's theory of emotion is one of the most influential classification approaches for general emotional responses. He considered there to be eight primary emotions - anger, fear, sadness, disgust, surprise, anticipation, acceptance, and joy.

6 Option #1 Emotion

7 The photographs will be titled that emotion.
For this assignment, you must represent three emotions in your photographs. The photographs will be titled that emotion. Some emotions may not appear on the wheel (embarrassment, ect). Anything that completes the phrase “I feel _______”.

8 Approach #1 Photograph someone expressing the emotion in question.

26 The use of photographs is loaded because you are adding someone into a photograph who is not actually there. This loans itself to the creative process, and often tells a story.
