HIPAA What is it? Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act
Act Promulgated in 1996 by the Department of Health and Human Services Public Law Medical Privacy-National Standard to Protect the Privacy of Personal Health Information

Current Status HIPAA has changed how medical facilities, clinics, offices, etc. can do business. Industry is accountable for any “leaks” to the public by employees with large fines attached to any prosecution. Many facilities have stricter rules regarding schools and colleges entering their facilities. Health Careers programs may loose sites if students are not properly trained.

CTE and CME Partnership
A partnership was formed with CTE and UND School of Medicine & Health Science - Continuing Medical Education The partnership would allow high school and post secondary students to access the School of Medicine’s electronic HIPAA training program. The electronic training is the same as training provided by facilities for new employees.

HIPAA Electronic Training Program
Health Careers and Health Related programs can access the UND School of Medicine electronic HIPAA training program by enrolling with Continuing Medical Education. There is NO COST for accessing the and using the program. There is a COST for taking the test. The cost for the test is $5.00 per student.

The form is an Excel document

HIPAA Electronic Training Program
CME is under agreement with the vendor to add names once each semester according to their contract. Schools will need to support CME and adhere to the deadlines as well. Deadline – Once each semester Fall Semester September 22, 2003 Spring Semester TBA

Instructor Training is Provided by staff of the School of Medicine. The first training event was held during the All Service Conference in Bismarck. A second training event can be conducted at UND if needed. We will consider continuing training at the All Service Conference as a post conference session.

Currently we have 16 colleges and schools registered 8 campuses health related programs Nursing is the most common participant 8 high school Health Careers programs There are 393 students participating

Issues High Schools paying the $5.00 fee Schools have been paying the costs since it is part of the course. Add to next year’s budget Who should take the HIPAA training? Students going on shadows, clinical or internships When should students take the course? When it appropriate within the curriculum.
