8 Bacteria = Prokaryotic!

9 Compare to Human Cells…

10 How do we treat a bacterial infection?
Antibiotics! Your body will naturally try to fight the infection, but when it becomes too overwhelming, we need antibiotics.

11 What was the first antibiotic?
Penicillin! Discovery: Alexander Fleming

12 How do antibiotics work?
Two types: Bactericidal = KILLS the bacteria (interferes with cell wall) Bacteriostatic = stops bacteria from multiplying or stops protein production

13 What about viruses?

14 What is a virus? Definition… A microscopic particle capable of infecting cells of living organisms and inserting its genetic material. What’s this???

15 “Trouble in a small package.”
A virus is made up of two main components: Core of genetic material Protein coat Viruses are NOT cells. Therefore they do not contain any of the cell’s organelles.

16 Enveloped Virus Examples
Influenza Virus HIV Virus

17 Bacteriophages

18 Viruses need a host. Now what?

19 Watch This!

20 How do we treat viral infections?
Hint: No treatment… just prevention!

21 Complete the vaccine webquest on your iPad and complete the questions.

23 Done? Do Scenario 3! 1. This season’s flu strain is being called one of the worst ever, and people are starting to panic. Amidst this epidemic, you are in Europe and want to return home. What precautions would you take to protect the health of both you and your family? 2. A zombie pandemic threatens to cause the extinction of every human on the planet. When zombies bite humans, the infected humans eventually turn into the undead. It is unclear whether the cause of this transformation is a bacterium or virus. What steps should be taken by the CDC to prevent apocalyptic spread of the living dead?
