Physical and Chemical Properties
By the end of the day today: I will be able to analyze a change in matter and determine if it is a chemical or physical change
2
Bellringer 9/5 There are 4 liquid items set up in
BE SURE TO CHECK YOUR GREEN EXIT TICKET ON THE CABINET. There are 4 liquid items set up in various locations in the room Your job is to identify if they are a(n): Suspension Colloid Solution Mixture You will have 4 minutes to complete and return to your seats. Anyone who is not in their seats at the 4 minute mark will receive a penalty on the game we’re playing later in class.
3
REMEMBER TEST FRIDAY NOTEBOOK CHECK WILL BE FRIDAY

Today… We are going over physical and chemical changes
Your learning target today is: I can look at a substance, or scenario, and will be able to determine if a chemical or physical change is occurring. The Cornell notes should be taped/glued onto page 25 in IAN.
5
Why does this Matter? Has mass and takes up space
Everything around us is matter
6
What’s the Difference? Matter can change
Examples: Freeze, cut, burn, etc. 2 types of changes Physical changes Chemical changes
7
Physical Changes Definition: when the state or form of matter is changed without changing its chemical composition. Examples: cutting, freezing, melting, etc.
8
Changes in State: Vocabulary
9
Chemical Change Definition: takes place on a molecular level and produces a new chemical substance. A chemical change always involves a chemical reaction.
10
Where is the Evidence??? Evidence of a chemical change:
color change, gas production, and release of heat, light, odor, or sound. Examples: Burning (combustion), rusting, tarnishing and fermenting
11
Name That Change!! Talk over scenario with your table partner(s)
Write down if you think it’s chemical (C) or physical (P) on your white board Each correct answer= 1 point Tie-Breaker at the end!!! Prize!!

Send one person up from your team to compete Must be silent
25
Tie Breaker!! Who won the University of Georgia vs. Appalachian State game on Saturday? 5 extra points if you know the score of the game.
26
Sort and Argue!! At your table there are 2 envelopes, 1 for each pair.
Working with your elbow partner at your table, organize the given scenarios into two piles: physical change and chemical change You have four minutes to work with your partner! Good Luck!
27
For the rest of class… You should be working on Physical and chemical changes worksheet This should be taped/glued onto page 28 in IAN. If this is not completed in class then it will be for homework. Remember, we have a test on Friday…we need to be reviewing daily for this.
