Physical and Chemical Properties
By the end of the day today: I will be able to analyze a change in matter and determine if it is a chemical or physical change
2
8/23 8/24 Unit 2 Plan of Attack Physical and Chemical Properties
Binder: Unit 2 Unit 2 Plan of Attack 8/23 Physical and Chemical Properties 8/24 Physical and Chemical Changes
3
Why does this Matter? Has mass and takes up space
Everything around us is matter
4
What’s the Difference? Matter can change
Examples: Freeze, cut, burn, etc. 2 types of changes Physical changes Chemical changes
5
Physical Changes Definition: when the state or form of matter is changed without changing its chemical composition. Examples: cutting, freezing, melting, etc.
6
Changes in State: Vocabulary
7
Chemical Change Definition: takes place on a molecular level and produces a new chemical substance. A chemical change always involves a chemical reaction.
8
Where is the Evidence??? Evidence of a chemical change:
color change, gas production, and release of heat, light, odor, or sound. Examples: Burning (combustion), rusting, tarnishing and fermenting
9
Name That Change!! Talk over scenario with your desk partner(s)
