22nd June 2016 SOLO Taxonomy
2
What is SOLO taxonomy? Structure of Observed Learning Outcomes (SOLO) Taxonomy is a simple, reliable and robust model of learning. It describes five levels of learning outcomes. A way of engaging children in their current stage of learning. Allows children to self evaluate and reflect on next steps.

4
Why SOLO Taxonomy? Helps pupils to develop a robust, ‘can do’ attitude. It is a mental model. Enables pupils to make mistakes. (HA – F I R) Shows next steps in learning. Inclusion of pre structural suggests that every learner needs help to start – ‘knowing nothing’ is an opportunity. It means we have found something new to learn about! (Foundations)

An example of SOLO in action
Science (Light) Pre- structural: I have heard of light. Uni-structural: I know that light travels in straight lines. Multi-structural: shadows are formed when light is blocked. There are different light sources. Light reflects off surfaces. Relational: I understand how a periscope works using knowledge of light reflection, sources of light, light travelling in straight lines. Extended abstract: I can use other areas of the curriculum (maths / art / DT / Computing) to design and make my own periscope or similar invention.

Introducing SOLO to children
Use visual reference points. Model the correct language frequently. Ensure peer and group discussions around SOLO. Introduce using examples that children will easily understand. Use across the curriculum. SOLO hand signs can be used for children to share their initial understanding with the teacher or peers. This can then be referred to at key points in the lesson to show progress. Displays in classrooms will show the levels of SOLO and the hand signs with relevant vocabulary.

Introducing this to the children
Visual reference point Ensure posters (to be created by LE) are up in all classrooms. Try to use SOLO cross-curricular – not just in maths
