1 Plant Reproduction

2 Propagation Increasing the number of a plant species or reproduction of a species

3 Sexual Propagation The plant production from seeds
Allows most variation of any propagation method Sexual reproduction occurs through pollination

4 Sexual Propagation The use of seed for reproducing plants
Sexual propagation is the only way to obtain new varieties and increase hybrid vigor of the plants Often times sexual propagation is less expensive and quicker than other methods

5 Asexual Propagation Asexual propagation is the use of a part or parts of a plant for reproducing plants Also called vegetative propagation T The new plant is an exact duplication of the parent plant

6 Methods of Asexual Propagation
Cuttings are vegetative parts that the parent uses to regenerate itself Some examples include leaf cuttings, root cuttings, and stem cuttings Rooting hormones are applied to speed up root development

7 Methods of Asexual Propagation
Layering is a method of asexual propagation where the stem is encouraged root while still attached to the parent plant. Examples: Simple layering, tip layering, and air layering

8 Air Layering Roots form on the aerial part of a plant after the stem is girdled or slit at an angle and enclosed in a moist rooting medium at the point of injury

9 Simple Layering Long, flexible stems and can be propagated

10 Tip Layering Tip layering is quite similar to simple layering. In tip layering, rooting occurs near the tip of the current season’s branch which touches the ground.

11 Division Is a method of asexual propagation by dividing or separating the main part of the plant into smaller parts

12 Grafting Is a method of asexual propagation for joining two plants together as they grow as one T-budding is the most common type of grafting

13 Class Work Draw and label the parts of a leaf
Draw and label the parts of a fruit Draw and label the layers of a leaf What is the photosynthesis formula and describe it. Unit 15 Self-evaluation
