Roof Construction & Types Computer Aided Design Inst: Mr. Johnston Logan High School
2
Goal Student will become familiar with different roof types and the structural members used to support them.
3
Roofs When you look at houses in your neighborhood, do you notice their roofs? Do you know the difference between a 3-in- 12 and an 8-in-12 slope? Do you know how roof slope affects the look of the house?

A truss roof compared to a roof framed with rafters
A truss roof compared to a roof framed with rafters. In a typical truss roof (below left), the webs render the attic uninhabitable. If the ridge is high enough, however, a roof framed with rafters can be a room (below right).
5
An attic truss. Attic trusses create a cavity between the webs for a room.
6
Boom Truck
7
Gable- 4/12 pitch The most frequently seen roof.
Economical and easy to construct. It handles snow and rain and is easily adaptable to many types of homes.
8
Gable
9
Flying Gable
10
Gable with Dormers
11
Hip Roof-more expensive to build due to the labor of additional framing. Gives the house a low profile and eliminates siding on the gable end.
12
Flat Roof
13
Flat Roof More frequent in contemporary homes.
It requires the least cost for materials and labor. Demands special care to seal against leaks.
14
Mansard-Roof having two slopes on all sides with the lower slope steeper than the upper one.
15
Gambrel Roof
16
Gambrel (barn roof)
17
Why a Gambrel? The gambrel truss design eliminates the need for upstairs post and beam supports. Any walls inside the building are non-load bearing, leaving you the freedom to create any floor plan you wish.
18
Monitor Roof
19
Monitor Roof (Different Angle)
20
Shed Roof-To provide some slope and drainage.
