Plot Definition: A series of related events that make up a story or drama. Example: When you write a short summary of a story, you would be describing plot

Chronological Order Definition: The time order in which things happen.
Example: First,… Then… Next,… Lastly,…

Chronological Order You will often see chronological order in directions: Have you ever made macaroni and cheese? It’s simple! First, boil some water and make some macaroni. Then, make your cheese sauce. After the cheese sauce is ready, mix it with the macaroni. Bake the entire thing in the oven. Finally, it’s time to eat!

Which paragraph is in chronological order?
Pennsylvania has many historic sites. You can visit Revolutionary war sites, like Valley Forge. You can also visit important locations from the Civil War, like Gettysburg. Finally, you can also see the site of the first oil well in Titusville. Pennsylvania has many neat places to visit! Through the ages, Pennsylvania has seen many interesting events. The state was founded in 1681 by William Penn. Later, Pennsylvania was the site of important Revolutionary War battles. After that, Pennsylvania was home to new factories during the Industrial Revolution. Today, Pennsylvania continues to make history.

Flashback Definition: A scene that interrupts the present action of the plot to flash backward and tell what happened at an earlier time. Examples: Batman Begins: Bruce Wayne remembers his parents deaths.

Foreshadowing Definition: The use of clues to hint at events that will occur later in the plot. Examples: Batman Begins: Lieutenant Gordon hints at the story in The Dark Knight.

Conflict Definition: The struggle that drives the plot
Examples: Batman Begins: Bruce Wayne uses his secret identity of Batman to fight crime in Gotham City

Setting Definition: The time and place of a story or play Examples:
Time: time of day, month, season, year, special occasion Place: building, city, country, culture

Mood Definition: A story’s atmosphere or the feeling it brings to the reader’s mind. Examples: A secret midnight meeting in a cemetery would be eerie, scary, or suspenseful.
